More On Hotel Shooting, Deadbeat Tourists Not Paying Parking Fines, Council Dithers On Taxi Shields
The major papers have more on yesterday’s shooting at the Westin Harbour Castle. The Post reports that the man was a former drug dealer who was sentenced for trying to smuggle ecstasy into the US. The Star ponders whether luxury hotels are being used by dealers to conduct their business. Det. Sgt. Larry Cowley, who works with Toronto Police’s Drug Squad has this to say:
“It’s a way of camouflaging themselves, really. Instead of doing the deal in the middle of crack city in downtown or a bad housing area, they do it in an upscale hotel.”
Sadly, more shootings. A woman was killed in a drive-by early this morning.
Tourists aren’t paying their parking tickets. Every year the city loses some $3 million from unpaid fines, top of the deadbeat list, Albertans. Figures.
The city’s peregrine falcons, or pigeon population controllers, are dying when they run into the city’s many tall buildings.
Taxi drivers won’t be getting shields anytime soon. Council wants a device that’s approved by the CSA (Canadian standards Association) or something similar. They’re also not sure whether the shields are a good idea because they make Toronto look unsafe. We think dead cabbies make the city look more unsafe.
