Looking Pho A New Standard

2006_7_11phohung.jpgWe’re going to hide under our desks because of that headline. A friend and pho-aficianado recently told us that Pho Hung raised their prices yet again. Since we’ve moved to Toronto Pho Hung has been a measuring stick by which we’ve measured all other pho places. The portions are well-sized, the food was tasty and until recently the prices have been quite cheap. But success seems to have gotten to the management at Pho Hung and with plenty of other options we’re now on the search for a new place to get our Vietnamese fix. In the running so far are Pho 88 (270 Spadina), The Golden Turtle (125 Ossington), and Xe Lua (254 Spadina). The deal breaker for us is whether a place skimps on fresh thai basil, we love that stuff.

Hello Saigon (394 Spadina) just up the street has the best Pho I’ve had in Toronto.

    1) Fuck, I hate when this happens. The prices all just went up at Ghandi Roti as well… I’ve never been there, but I was kinda hoping to go sometime… but certainly not now that they’re charging $12 for a goddamn roti.
    2) Do you know if the prices have also gone up at the Pho Hung at Bloor and Avenue?
    3) Which was the pho place we went to with the train on the sign?
4)As for a headline, may I sugggest “Looking Pho Pho in All The Right Places”?

The pho place with the train on the sign is Xe Lua.
Try Scarborough Pho 88, on Alton Towers Circle (near McCowan and Steeles). Its different than the one on Spadina, I think. They soooo do not skimp on the basil and sprouts. In fact, you could even ask for more.

I have to admit that Pho Hung’s Pho is pretty good, but I’ve always been annoyed that they skimp on the napkins. With pho being kind of messy, this is definitely a pho pas (groan)
My personal favourite is Pho 88, because they give you a choice of thick or thin noodles. Most places just seem to give you thick noodles, which I don’t like.

Bun Saigon, Spadina just north of Sullivan, west side. You may have to ask for the basil and sprouts, but there’s no arguing with the soup.

OK: Xe Lua, can be very very good but is inconsistant. I recommend having only midnight soup at this place as I have had daytime meals of shockingly bad quality.
