The Globe reports that drownings over the Canada Day long weekend were actually down this year. Only three were reported, sadly one of them was an eight-year old boy. In 2005, 16 people drowned over the July long weekend.
A man was shot in an elevator at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel by the lakeshore. The cops also found about four kilos of cocaine in a hotel room.
Despite events like this police insist that shootings in Toronto are down this year because of recent efforts targetting gangs in the city. So far there have been 137 shootings to 164 last year.

The Attorney General wants to create an electronic database for pawnshops to try to stifle the flow of stolen goods. Critics wonder whether this might be another way police can infringe on privacy.

For a moment there I thought the pawnshop database might be to regulate how many are allowed on a block. Anyone else notice the more pawn shops there are on a street, the crappier over all the neighbourhood is? While I'm sure the later causes the former, what neighbourhood needs every other business to be a pawnshop?
