CD Stores Spin Off the Map

070706FlashandCrash.jpg It’s weird to think of used CD stores belonging to another era, but apparently it’s true. In just a short time, stores like Sonic Boom and Second Spin have added vinyl to their selection, while others are going out of business. One of these is Flash and Crash- its selection is/was second to none and never outrageously priced. (Note to other used record stores: you just can’t price a used cd at $19.99 and write “NEW” on the tiny white sticker. Nobody is going to believe you.) Passing by Flash and Crash today, it was advertising its imminent closure with all CDs selling for 25% off. So if you’re out on the weekend and nearby, check out the sale or just pay your dues to one of the former highlights of the record shopping ritual.

That’s actually really too bad. Used CD stores have always been a good place to pick up music at a better quality and cheaper than the iTMS.
‘course, that being said some of these places need to shut down anyway. Surly clerks and bad pricing are hallmarks of some of the crappier stores, as noted.

I was a little tight on cash two years back so I went through my CD collection and hauled about 20 to Sonic Boom in hopes of walking out with some cash. They offered me 25 cents on CDs they were selling for at least $6.

Oh yeah rek, I got that treatment too at the same place. Years ago when my then girlfriend (and now wife) moved in we merged our CD collections and we took the doubles in.
What troubled me most was that the clerk refused to make eye contact from the time we said we had CDs to sell to the time we left (with most of our CDs).

Simon – I had to wait 20 minutes for one of them to get back to me with their offer. I don’t think he even looked at them (not that they were rare or anything like that).

Weird… I always sell my CDs at Sonic Boom specifically because they’ve always bought everything from me without giving me attitude. I remember taking in a few batches of 20 or 30 CDs when I first moved in with my wife, and they gave us around $70 to $100 each time, which I thought was a good deal for music we had doubles of or knew we’d never listen to again. Maybe I was just lucky… but I found it the best of the bunch. In the past I’ve received horrible attitude from other CD buyers.

According to the sign in their window, today (July 9th) is the last day they will be open.
To tell the truth, I thought they had already closed for good: every time I’ve walked by in the past week, the doors have been shut and no staff were present, even though they still have a lot of stock in the racks. Hopefully they’re actually open some time today.

Flash n Crash was my favorite usded CD store on Bloor. Sentimental and nostalgic too because when I first started dating my boyfriend, I found out that he’s friends with Dan (the owner) and designed their “buy 10 get 1 free” card. Dan’s vast knowledge of music will utilized in the future with a job at Soundscapes.
