Beats, Breaks & Culture

break.jpgToronto has exploded in festivals this weekend. Scream, Toronto Outdoor Art Expo, Fringe, uh, Molson Indy. Not to mention The Big Game. But there is another festival happening right now that is worth making time for: Beats, Breaks and Culture. This Harbourfront festival focuses on urban electronica, global flavours, and touches on the 4 pillars of hip hop, including live graffiti creations and the largest breakdancing competition in Canada.

Yesterday was a vibrant day at beats&breaks. Tents were filled with thick bass beats and spicy food. Graf artists produced some inspired live art and DJ's spun shocking sounds you don't expect to hear in daylight. Jamie Lidell brought his soul-filled electronica all the way from the UK. People were selling their crafts while pulsing to the beat. Moms were feeding the kiddies while swaying to the sound.

Without a doubt, the highlight was Pop, Lock and Load III semi-final breakdancing competition. Hosted by Benzo from Bag of Trix with DJ Serious, break crews from all over the city ( and one from Ottawa) battle each other for a $1000 prize. The final competition is tonight at 5:30pm and I promise it is worth the trip just to see what these b-boys/girls can do with their bodies. Talent fucking abounds.

Today is the last day. Check out the full sched here. But go. Honestly, go.
