Well, that was short-lived. ABC has announced that there will be no more episodes of The One: Making A Music Star. The website states, "There are no plans for additional episodes. Thanks to all who participated in and supported The One!"
This doesn't really come as much of a surprise, since the show has been plagued with issues since before it even aired, beginning with CBC viewers causing an uproar over pre-empting The National one hour in favour of airing The One. Reality overkill doesn't help much, either, with Rockstar: Supernova, American Idol, Canadian Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, America's Got Talent, etc. (the list could go on forever) saturating the airwaves. Not to mention that aside from George Stroumboulopoulos, the show was quite poorly produced.
Torontoist is secretly happy that the show didn't turn into a monster, because even though Strombo says he wouldn't jump ship to work in the U.S. full-time, at least this will help keep him in our fair country longer. Sorry George, we want to see you succeed, but love you too much to have America take you from our clutches.
No news yet as to whether the Canadian version of The One will still air or be cancelled, as well.

I just don't get your love of George. He's dull, unintelligent and his show services the lowest common denominator. And he wasn't the best thing on the One. Or at least if he was, that isn't much of a compliment.
He's a former VJ who should be doing what Rick the Temp is doing. He's not at all suited to the CBC.
But leave it to Canadians to overly praise a guy just because he seems nice and we remember him from our youth of watching Much like the good little corporate drones we were and still are.
More problematic is that, while The Hour serves the lowest common denominator, they aren't even interested in it.
Hopefully he's saving his money to enjoy many motorcycle trips in the future.
If he disappears from the media scene it's not going to be a national tragegy. But can his ego handle it?
Was there a best thing on The One? I watched it for a whole 10mins. and couldn't deal with it, but George held his own. Granted, it wasn't the smartest career choice.
It's a real shame that this site has to speak in the collective third person ALL THE FUCKING TIME (Talk of the Town you ain't). Most especially because I'm proof positive that there's at least one or two folks on your staff that shudder and cave at the very mention of George.
The best thing abour The One was watching it crash and burn. It was like a really horrible train wreck. If you happen to catch sight of it, it is very hard to look away. At least until you realize House reruns are on.
George held his own well enough. But not as well as he should have considering he did the job for years on Much. He looked uncomfortable and bewildered. That is certainly a change from his perpetual air of smugness on The Hour. Seacrest is much better. Heck even Mulroney is better. (Words I never thought I would think much less type.)
And hopefully he can land another superficial job making boatloads more money than he does at the CBC. This will leave more room for really charming hosts like Brent Bambury or Gian Ghomeshi (or, the way things are going at the CBC - Rick the Temp).
Perhaps a Canadian version would be less smarmy.
Interestingly, a few of us were just having this very debate, about speaking as a collective. I initially had 'This Torontoist' but changed it. I agree that we don't all have the same opinion about things. ;)
Btw, why the hell won't you people stand behind your opinions with your names? It's not a big deal to disagree or rant...that's what the comments are for.
