Will Someone Please Kick Rob Ford Out of Council, T.O. Sludge Going to London, Lots of Fascinating Tax News

2006_6_30rob.jpgFor all time we spend slagging councillor Howard Moscoe even on the worst of days he doesn't come close to the Mouth of Etobicoke, Rob Ford.

Many of us have been loud and boorish at a sporting event but only Rob would hand out his City Hall business card to the couple whose evening he ruined. Many councillors don't like the poor but only Rob goes out of his way to attack community grants of all size and stripes. Even the most skin-flint councillors acknowledge that programs that educate people and help prevent the spread of HIV are good things, but no, not Rob Ford. How this man has been elected to two terms at council is beyond us.

Toronto may be shipping its sewage sludge to a London area dump. Recently, the Michigan dump where the City had been shipping its sewage sludge had said it would stop taking shipments in August.

The gunman that shot at police and paramedics yesterday escaped and is still at large. No, a police helicopter wouldn't have helped so we don't want to see anyone even bring this up.

The newly renovated Palais Royale will be getting their parking lot, right on the grassy median of Lakeshore Boulevard. Residents strongly disliked this plan despite initially offering it up in February as a solution to an earlier plan which would have seen a parking lot paving over a chunk of parkland.

Queen's Park is freezing property assessments for two years. The GST is going down to 6% and if you use a metropass the feds want to give you some of your money back.

"For tonight's performance the part of Rob Ford will be played by Chris Farley."

I've worked for Rob Ford and had the pleasure of being his friend for many years. I have to say that he does more and cares more for this city than you wannabes ever could.

"... he does more and cares more for this city than you wannabes ever could." Which of course justifies his statements about AIDS. Rob Ford: He's Indifferent to the Suffering of Gays, Women, and Drug Addicts Because He Cares.

To be fair, though, Rob Ford does care a great deal for Toronto. The vast majority of people (incuding myself) may strongly disagree with him on most issues, but I don't think there can be much doubt as to his passion and concern with regards to the City's responsibility to its taxpayers. He also actually tends to be fairly good on democracy issues; his contempt for City Hall and the other councillors can sometimes be quite valuable, as when he was the sole councillor to fight against the extension of the last date before an election on which city councillors can send out their newsletters. He recognized that it's essentially a case of elected officials using taxpayer money to print and distribute campaign materials to all of their constituents, thereby making their incumbency even more of an unfair advantage than it already is.

And as much as I hate Rob Ford as a person, there are many other councillors I would less like to see return to City Hall next term: Del Grande, Grimes, Hall, Holyday, Kelly, Mammoliti, Minnan-Wong, Nunziata, Ootes, Shiner, Stintz, Thompson, and Watson. (Thankfully for everyone, Holyday and Shiner have not registered to run again, and Watson has just withdrawn her candidacy.)
