With cameras and editing software costing way way less than a year’s tuition at a decent film school there’s a veritable explosion of film out there. People are picking up cheap DV cams, shooting on digital cameras, and even their cellphones/palmpilots. So once in a while it’s nice to kick it old school and actually see films shot on film, and not just any kind of film but Super 8 with all its glorious nostalgia and unique character. The Splice This! fest has been showcasing films shot on Super 8 since 1998 and is apparently the only fest of its kind left in North America. The fest runs June 23 and 24th at X-Pace in Kensington Market ($8/night).
