Police Shoot Man Dead, 'Beach' Signs Go Up, Mayor Raises Pride Flag

Police shoot a man dead in a confrontation in Scarborough early this morning.

A 25-year old suspected street racer who was severely injured in a crash last week has died.

2006_6_20streetcar.jpgAn elderly woman was dragged 12 metres by a streetcar in Etobicoke. Thankfully she survived. She spent half-an-hour under the car as emergency workers used equipment to lift the streetcar off of her.

On Queen East the first "the Beach" signs have just gone up. But we don't think the debate will ever be over.

The Globe writes about Desmond Cole, the downtown City Idol.

The Mayor and dignitaries raise the Pride flag at City Hall to start the City's pride week. The Star reports that our well-coiffed mayor wore a "Queen" subway button as a little bit of subtle humour.

the beach vs. the beaches vote really shook my confidence in voting. most of the younger people from the beaches that I know weren't even aware of the vote! they were like, "wow, you know more about the beaches than i do!"

these are also people who swear it's "the beaches" and honestly i believe that if the vote was more publicized, that would have been the result.

unfortunately, there is really no better way to do it in fairness, so i guess we will have to live with the (perplexing) results.

I will continue to call it the Beaches.

Also, "the first sign have gone up" is just wrong. Even MS Word's grammar checker should have caught that.

I'm a bit baffled by this: Why wouldn't one of the City Idol candidates choose to run in Sylvia Watson's Parkdale ward? She's a lame-duck incumbent who keeps upsetting the community with her police-state approach to fighting crime and her support for paving over parkland near the lakeshore in favour of hundreds of parking spots for patrons of the new Palais Royale.

Opportunity knocks, people!
