NBA Picks… MLB Picks ‘Em Off

2006_06_29raptor.jpg
This Torontoist is slowly becoming a sports fan (as if.) After watching 1.5 Stanley Cup games, (my first hockey games ever,) and with plans to go to a baseball game, I’m a changed man. The plans are to see at least one game of each sport… Yes, even the CFL.
But now to the NBA. They had their draft on Wednesday and our cuddly Raptors had the number one pick! Who did they choose… Italian Andrea Bargnani. This pick makes him the first European player picked first in the past 6 years.
In MLB news, The Jays smashed the Washington Nationals (who used to be the Montreal Expos… single tear…) with a 6-1 win at the Rogers Centre.
In other MLB news, if you know about the baseball, today is your last day to vote for who will play in the All*Star Game.
And that’s all the Sports news I can handle.

Honestly, no offense, Robonto, but a small appeal to Torontoist: would it kill you to staff someone who knows a thing or two about sports?

  • Robonto

Hey, if you want to write about sports, by all means… email Ron or David. I read, I learn, I report. I figure some news is better than no news.

It was the first european taken number 1 overall ever. Lots of europeans have been taken in the last 6 years.

I enjoy Rob’s unique brand of sports journalism. I think it transcends genre boundaries. It’s sportoism of the absurd.

    Robonto -
I would if I felt I were up to snuff. However, I really don’t think I’m qualified to be a writer of any sort. And I must disagree with the idea that ‘some news is better than no news’; especially when this news isn’t coming from an informed source. Why report on sports when you’re not a sportswriter? Am I to think that Torontoist is just an experiment, or is this site really the metropolitan inlay it claims to be?
    Jill -
I’m not asking for Robert Creamer or Peter Golenbock here, just someone that can tap into the very narrow slice of site readers you have that give a damn about sports. Hilarious that qualifications don’t matter when dealing with a topic that so many of us urbanites with a foot in the arts community usually turn our backs on. I doubt you’d be as loose with your talk of transendence if a 54yr old H&R Block employee from East Gwillimberry decided to start covering Wavelength events:
“Now, I don’t know much about this Brian Borchardt character or Holy Fuck, but I do know that I like this instrument he’s playing. I believe it is called a musical sound box. It reminds me of a Leo Sayer album I bought in 1978 at the WH Smith in Hillcrest Mall”
I don’t consider any of it sportoism of the absurd; just sportoism of the hasnobusinesswritingaboutsports.

Well, Rockstar, I admit that Ray Barone I am not. But also, I don’t tend to offer commentary as Robert Creamer did. Thus, instead of dry facts, my ignorance (or actually my willingness to learn new things) adds some colour. The fact is, I’m growing to understand the importance/interest in sports, and I’m turning my head every once in a while to check it out, instead of just looking to architecture all the time.
As mentioned before there definitely are spots open for contributors. Once someone volunteers to do sports editorial, I’ll leave it to them.

I like Robonto, for all the reasons he posted above. As well as Jills(And might I say, “Sportoism” is a fantastic term. More cleverness from Jill = welcomely unsuprising). But Oat Globe makes a fine point as well.
    Also:
“I’m not asking for Robert Creamer or Peter Golenbock here”
The fact that you know who this is pretty much qualifies you.
    Also:
I’m of the mind that anyone who name drops East Gwillimbury is most likely from that neck of the woods. I rep the Holland Landing. You?

  • Oat Globe

Nope, born and raised in the city.
