Moscoe and Bobby Lowe Kiss and Make Up, Toronto School Board Asks Loaded Questions, Gardiner Closed

2006_6_2moscoe.jpgTTC Chair Howard Moscoe and injured TTC driver Bobby Lowe had a nice chat yesterday and cleared up a few things. Lowe actually said that his beef wasn't with the TTC but with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. They held up his cheque for five months and Lowe lost his apartment and had to break up his family because of that. Howard Moscoe also apologized for calling Lowe a liar on a radio show earlier in the week.

Does anyone have a very large hole that can be filled with sewage sludge? If so, the City of Toronto wants to know. It seems that the Michigan dumpsite for our sludge is fed up with the stink and will be turning the trucks away starting August 1st.

The Toronto Public School Board is including some possibly loaded questions on a survey for teachers. The questions ask about one's sexual orientation and ethnicity. The board says they're being used to make sure that hiring practices are fair and to give a better idea of the makeup of teachers in Toronto's public schools but some critics point out that in other jurisdictions this information has been used to discriminate. The union has no position.

The mayor wants the province and feds to cough up a part of the sales and income tax. He's citing the fact that property taxes just isn't enough for cities anymore. We hope that he doesn't get laughed out of Queen's Park or Parliament Hill.

Police break up a car-theft ring that has been stealing SUVs and smuggling them to West Africa. The group has been busy, apparently the police seized about 70 vehicles in all.

A city committee wants to take away Casa Loma from a chapter of the Kiwanis club that has been running the landmark for 70 years. The city wants to establish a public trust in the group's place despite the group paying $1 million a year in licensing fees and then donating profits to charity.

Those dastardly cyclists are at it again. This time they'll be closing down the Gardiner on Sunday for some charity event causing untold inconvenience to decent hard working car drivers. Dirty, sweaty hippies. Get a car.

Finally, the Ontario government is telling collection agencies to play nice. No more swearing and only three calls a week but now you can call on Sundays.
