Dufferin Mall Gets a Facelift

2006_06_14dufferinmall.jpgRenovations at Dufferin Mall are underway to “meet the needs of the community it serves.” Dufferin Mall cares about you and your shopping needs and wants to add some zest to the lives of consumers. “Dufferin Mall is re-inventing itself to deliver a youthful and vibrant shopping experience. It will soon sport a trendy look with powerful fashion stores taking the shopping experience at Dufferin Mall to new heights. The mall will transform completely in the next 7 months and will become virtually brand new. It will have a new food court, stores, floors, ceilings & washrooms. If you visit the mall you will see the transformation in the new store facades in the mall.”

With an H&M set to open this fall, we’re not so sure that “Ghetto Mall” will be a suitable nickname for our favourite mall any longer. As far as we know, the mall’s air conditioning will be pumping throughout the days of construction; you can continue to take advantage of Dufferin Mall for its cool air on those hot hot days (napping in the massage chairs is still a good idea). You won’t have to worry about going deaf due to non-stop jackhammering since “there will be no re-invention work in the mall during mall hours.”

We tend to think that Dufferin Mall will lose its unique atmosphere due to the re-invention and we’re feeling somewhat unsettled by the news. Most of the construction should be done just in time for this year’s holiday season so that you can have the pleasure of doing stress-laden shopping with throngs of bustling crowds in style.

I was staying at the Yorkdale Holiday Inn recently and wandered over to the nearby mall for a look-see. It was impressive. But what amused me was the big sign heralding NEW WASHROOM! It was like a sign you'd see at Disneyland before they unveil their big new thrill ride. And yet, the washroom picture DID seem kind of cool, if I understood the mural correctly. Some kind of tiered wall-long waterfall sink? Or damn thing. Anyway, if anyone has actually glimpsed this Promised land of a mall crap closet, do tell.

Since I live in the area, I am happy with the Dufferin Malls reinvention. I'd much prefer to see the ghetto mall change it's spots.

I feel overwhelmed by a flood of mixed emotion as a result of hearing this news.

I'm kindof glad. I never ever go to Dufferin mall, even though it's the closest mall to my house. I think a massive overhaul would be nice.

must be a slow news day to talk about mall renovations. You do know that malls are one of the worst things to happen in North America, don't you? They are one of the prime results of urban sprawl. And urban sprawl is why we have smog days and why you want to get into the "cool air on those hot hot days." And the fact they pump their AC so high is another reason we have smog days.

Now that I've said that, the Dufferin Mall is good for the west side in some regards. I just wish it wasn't indoors and didn't have a massive parking lot around it. Not to mention the horrible WalMart.

In other words: Malls get gentrified too.

I was there a few weeks ago doing my monthly No Frills - Dollarama run and saw some signs up... The slogan on the bottom of each was "The Inconvenience is Worth it." or something close to that. I thought to Robself 'what an odd marketing campaign for a mall...'

Tis true that the AC is unnecessarily on at full blast in the Duff mall on a summers day, but does it not make sense that public places, which can cool infinitely more ppl than a household or car with AC, are forgiven for providing a collective cooling experience? I do have AC at my house, but it's broken and the plan is not to fix it, so I do frequent the mall for the AC. Howev, i do find self cringing at the thought of how many ppl 1. drove to the mall on that hot hot day and 2. have their AC cranked to the max at home as they shop.

I like Dufferin Mall's location, if one wants to flee the mall for a completely different ambiance, they can just walk across the street to the best park in the city, Dufferin Grove.

Umm. It's a mall. They are not ghetto by definition.
But if you really want ghetto, try that one in Rexdale at Kipling and Finch.
If it's still there.
I think they may have torn it down for being too ghetto.

it seems they jsut have most of the businesses
eaton centre has so people don't have to go there
to get all the same stuff .

Beth, have you been to Gerrard Square?
**shudder**

The 2nd-worst Dirt Mall in Toronto (after The Galleria) is undergoing a similar transformation - The Gerrard Square Mall. With the recent addition of Home Depot and Staples, plus a huge redesign inside and out, they're hoping the days of no-name junk stores are over.

However, both the Dufferin Mall and the Gerrard Square Mall will both remain "Dirt Malls" in my mind until such time as they each get a bookstore - for that is what separates the dirt from the clean.

I was wandering around The Duff the other day, and I noticed a sign around one of the construction/re-invention areas that said "caution, artists at work." I turned to my friend, puzzled, "are they making a joke on that sign?" he said "yeah, I think so." And so we stopped and marvelled at a begining-to-be-built thing, because construction _is_ art, in a sense.

The Dufferin Mall Wal-Mart stinks like rotten eggs. Right at the top of the move-ator, and has since it opened. I wonder if the renovation will unearth the dead body that must be under the mall emitting that stench...

Wal-Mart is disgusting. Rotten egg smell = repulsive.

Yes, a bookstore would be nice. Those bargain book places are not bookstores (although they ARE stores with books).

artists at work? nice....

Are we seriously going to do this thing?
Because if we are, I'm going to start naming things like the Warden Power Center, and Thornhill Square (before it got torn down).
