Don’t Mess With Cabbies

2006_6_2taxi.jpgWhile TTC operators might be passive agressive (oh we won’t dispute your fares but we’ll go on an illegal strike because we’re pissed off, anyway) it seems like many of this city’s cabbies are just plain aggressive when it comes to fare disputes.
CP24 reports that a group of cabbies got into a brawl with a suspicious fare in downtown Toronto. One cabby, who was under attack radioed for help and fellow cabbies responded. They nabbed the culprit and two cabbies were sent to hospital with injuries.
Many cabbies apparently feel that cops aren’t protecting them adequately but cops warn that taking matters into your own hands can be very dangerous. We just hope they get those plastic shields up soon.

Most of the cab drivers who have been killed have being trying to prevent a passenger from skipping out on the bill or were resisting being robbed… Plastic shields don’t stop fare disputes, they just move them out of the cab where the cameras won’t catch whatever goes down.
With the price of gas way up and too many cabs on the road, cabbies are really hurt financially by the occupational hazards of run-away fares and robberies — so they fight back regardless of the danger. They need the cash; but they need their lives more! We should do something so cabbies can make a decent living again, rather than splurging on plastic shields that haven’t been proven to make things any safer…
