This was such an obvious shot, too. The Spadina tunnel’s one of the prettiest pieces of architecture on the TTC. Thanks Ron.

Anyone know why they took the moving walkway out? Since they took it out, it’s quicker to go an extra stop and change at St. George.

“In 2004, Spadina station lost its popular moving walkway between the Bloor-Danforth and Spadina platforms. Time had taken its toll on the long sidewalk, and it was spending more and more time shut down for maintenance. In February of the year, a TTC report recommended that the walkway be removed. It was too expensive to maintain or rebuild, and no company made walkways that long anymore. The TTC’s tight capital budget spelled the end for the popular feature, and the walkway was removed over the summer.”

Even when it was operational, I always found it faster to transfer at St George.

I used to transfer at Spadina just for that walkway. Sad, I know.
I agree, this is my favorite shot in the series so far as well.

this is my station, and i have a fondness for it, but that tunnel is a far cry from being an attractive “piece of architecture”! what is the genius here, exactly? the tile (which now looks like a ridiculous patch job)? the crumbly concrete ceiling? the claustrophobia? it’s a tunnel. only good for people with roller skates. or skateboards. or rollerblades. or those wheelie shoes kids have these days. you get the idea.

I just thought it looked cool. A bit eerie, and cool. And Chris, I love walking the length of that tunnel.

    Thanks for the info David!
Seems odd that, if budget restrictions were so tight, they spent money removing the machine and re-tiling where it was. Why didn’t they just leave it there unoperational?

  • Gloria

    That’s the TTC for you.
