Four More Years, Mount Pleasant Cemetery's Fishy Development, Sing Us A Song The Budget Chief?

Elected municipal officials across Toronto now have four-year terms thanks to Queen's Park. Citing the increased complexity of municipal affairs the province rushed through a bill lengthening municipal government terms. The reform divided council and raised criticism from local activists like former mayor John Sewell.

Anti-poverty groups are peeved at Jane Pitfield and want her off the city's homeless advisory committee. They're angry over her desire for a by-law that bans panhandling.

2006_5_11mountpleasant.jpgResidents near the Mount Pleasant Cemetery are questioning development in the historic site. They're questioning the corporate structure of the group which controls the cemetery. In recent months the group has been cutting down trees and trying to build commercial structures.

The Post also throws more fuel onto the Joshua Errett-Joe Clark fire.

The Sun reports that someone stole a truck carrying 58,000 litres of gas. Fortunately a GPS tracking system helped police recover the truck just hours after it was stolen.

The City is holding its annual auction this weekend. You can bid on everything from bikes to old City vehicles.

Members of the city's Tamil community are angry over raids at the Tamil Academy of Culture and Technology and the government's recent addition of the Tamil Tigers on the list of terrorist organizations. Because of this some Toronto Tamils feel they are being unfairly targeted by law enforcement.

The Star tells us things we don't know about budget chief David Socknacki. He's spicy (the Scarborough councillor runs a spice business) and musical (he plays the piano, badly according to him).

"Joshua on Torontoist"

I've heard of changing surnames to avoid accusations of nepotism ... but come on.

sounds like a veiled accusation in itself, mw. where exactly have you heard of this changing of surnames?

and have you heard of changing black leather pants to avoid accusations of a black leather pant bias?

user-pic

They don't know your last name at the National Post? (Maybe this debate can be the subject of tomorrow's "Blogtown" feature ...)

Sorry to disappoint but there's no great conspiracy happening here at the Post. Working in A-section, I hardly ever deal with Ben Errett , and to be honest here and reveal my own stupidity, I didn't know that Joshua was his brother. So watch those accusations of nepotism until you have all the facts. And if you're so worried about everybody being identified, what's M.W. stand for?

Maybe a few more sarcasm tags are required here?

Just was curious about how last names are attached to some people, and absent from others. (I can understand when this is a matter of protecting anonymity, sure, but Josh's full bio is on the about page on this site.)

And while it's not as glaring an error--but could've been discovered with a bit of effort--the "Ian" quoted in the piece as Joe Clark's detractor is actually his co-conspirator on the Leslieville site. (And his surname is there, too.)

... or, you know, it's not an "error" so much as an absence.

(I think it's great that something posted on a blog can be acknowledged in the olde newspaper ... but also looking forward to more than the same four or five blogs being scraped for material.)

If I had known that I would be quoted in the Post, I would have made up a surname.

The neat thing is probably more people read the blogs than read the Post.

Has anyone been on Yonge by the MP Cemetery?? All of the large trees that lined the road are gone. What's up with that??
