Film Fridays: Poseidon Sinks Lohan, Gay Films Coming Soon and Films From Your Phone

Our regular Film Friday writer Mathew Kumar is absent so I'll be filling in for his very big (size 13, right Mathew?) shoes.

2006_5_12poseidon.jpgWe're still not sure why anyone would remake 1972's the Poseidon Adventure, but they gone and done it. Director Wolfgang Petersen must really making movies with a lot of water in it and we agree with Now in thinking that it's way too soon for a movie with big waves. Insensitive Holywood types. Just for that we won't be using an image that actually represents the film but this awkwardly photoshopped "Poseidon" image instead.

The less I talk about Lindsay Lohan's new film the better.

Let's talk about something else, anything else. What about the films being featured at this year's Contact photo festival. The films touch on everything from Calcutta's photo studios to Helmut Newton. All of them are at the NFB.

2006_5_12strange.jpgIn other festival related news. The Jewish Film Fest closes up but there are two fests waiting in the wings. The Inside Out Film Fest opens next Thursday with Boy Culture, Allen Brocka's film about a high-class escort and his two roommates which also sounds like a sitcom you could pitch to NBC. I"m more intrigued by the more musical films like Is It Really So Strange, a film about Latino youths in East LA that really like Morrissey! (pictured here)

But sneaking in just before Inside and Out is Mobifest. Billing itself as Canada's first mobile film festival the fest will feature films shot on and made for camera phones, palm pilots, etc. There are sample films on their website and what do you know, camera phones aren't just for capturing your (or Lindsay Lohan's) drunken exploits. The one night fest happens Wednesday.

fyi, it's called inside out, not inside and out.

There are only two reasons anyone would possible remake "The Poseidon Adventure" ... swollen ego and complete lack of original ideas ... I made the mistake of going to see this and wanted to claw my own eyes out of boredom

thank you very much for your help. You guys 70815 rock, thanks again.
