Bike Post Bandit!

2006_5_1bikepost.jpgTorontoist reader Rami sent us this photo. Two strikes against this bike thief. First there’s the stealing bicycles part but the fact he or she had to destroy municipal infrastructure to get at his target is even worse. We have to admit the thief would’ve had to be very well prepared to be able to not only pop the post out of the concrete but also to dismantle it.
Torontoist has to admit that we’ve seen plenty of bike posts that haven’t been installed too sturdily and wonder whether the people over at Works can do something about that. But first they better fix this one, it’s at College and Palmerston.
As for the bike thief? May your hands and feet get infected with painful sores and the bikes you ride constantly get flats.

    I don’t think this is the work of a thief. I was walking home during rush hour a few weeks ago, and there was a car accident at this intersection. I overheard a bystander say, “He tried to pull a u-turn over two lanes while talking on his cell phone.”

    I was walking the dog as precisely that spot last fall. A dude rode up on a Norco mountain bike and offered to sell it for $40. He said it was from Texas.

    No, this is clearly the work of a thief. You can’t see it in the photo but the ring was broken in one place (on the left, where it attahced to the post), just enough to slip a bike lock out.

    This was a car accident.
    No bike thief can bend the upright post over. That’s one of them thar auto-mobiles we hear so much about.

    Many bike thieves drive big trucks, which are very practical for hauling off large numbers of bikes all at once. They are also useful for ramming things to wich bikes are locked, and standing on top of, in order to lift bikes and their tall things, to which they are locked.
    So stop! You can all be right!

    I left my bike locked up on Danforth Friday night and when I went back on Monday it was gone. I knew it would be gone. I’m not sure why I did it. I have to find another way to exercise now.
