Union Station Deals Collapses, Homicide #18 and a TTC Strike?

2006_4_26union.jpgThe Union Pearson Group, a consortium working with the city to reno Union Station, has backed out of the $150 million project. They argued they couldn't meet the city's deadline of May 31st. The city, like a strict university professor won't give any further extensions, citing numerous extensions already given.

Police found a body last night, the city's 18th murder victim of the year. They've also got a suspect in that case under arrest.

An 18-year old who may have been involved in the stabbing death of a 17-year old high school student turns himself in. He admits that seeing his face flashed all over TV got to him.

The TTC Union is saying a strike might happen in the next two weeks. The union is concerned with the comission's plans to change working hours of many employees from daytime to nighttime shifts. The strike would be illegal.

The City wants ads on street furniture and can't enforce the postering by-law until kiosks are in place they argue.

The City has passed a no-sweatshop policy which means clothing worn by city staffers will be sourced from companies that follow labour and human rights laws.

If the TTC strikes for even one hour, it'll be the final straw that pushes me to take my life in my own hands and start biking to work.

Ron, what do you mean by "The strike would be illegal?" In my mind there are very few illegal strikes, and mostly strikes that conflict with draconian legislation passed to limit the range of tools workers can use to resist poor working conditions.

Poor working conditions? Please! TTC workers should be happy they still have employment, especially given the crappy service, archaic (and inefficient) processes, bitter attitude, and constant rate increases riders recieve on a regular basis.

A visit to any other world-class city will show you how poorly the entire TTC has done at striking and implementing a vision for public transport in this city.
