The Geriatric General Is Delusional

quinn.jpgMatt Stajan was eight years old the last time Pat Quinn was considered to be the NHL's best coach. That's right... this season will mark fourteen years since Quinn was at the top of the game. So with the way things unfolded for the Maple Leafs and Team Canada this year, one might expect him to quietly disappear into retirement. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case. Although Torontoist may not be a big fan of Quinn, they would never wish for the energetic coach to lose his mind. Sadly, it may have just happened. Following the Leafs victory over the Islanders on Wednesday night, Quinn stated that his team will make the playoffs. Understandably Leaf supporters are on a high right now, with the team recording points in each of the past 9 games. It's the same classic symptoms that Leaf Nation has been plagued with for too long now. A few wins and the Stanley Cup is now a sure thing, management is praised, contracts are extended, and everyone forgets that Jean-Sebastien Aubin isn't Martin Brodeur.

leafs_suck.jpgPerhaps with this being his twentieth and likely final coaching year, Quinn is like a desperate player at the end of their career, delusionally dreaming of Stanley Cup glory. Well a wakeup call is on the way. After seeing teams like the Islanders, Bruins and Panthers during the winning streak, the Leafs now face the Ottawa Senators at the ACC tomorrow night. If you include the preseason, this will be the tenth time the two teams will play this year, with the Leafs winning zero of the previous meetings. It seems like Quinn's dream and career are about to be over.

Are there any Torontonians on this site who actually like the Leafs?

Better get your facts right -- Pat Quinn was coach of the year in 1999.

Hey Matt..

Read the fine print you f'n moron.. quinn was runner-up to jacques martin in 99.. don't you dare come at me about statistics.

maybe this is easier for you to read..

I want to be-leaf, but I don't think they have a hope in hell...

Ready to eat your words yet? We're up 5-0 after two... Senators suck ass, but what else is new? If the Leafs don't manage to make the playoffs, it's going to be delicious watching Ottawa get the boot from someone else.

Thanks for standing up for the boys. The young talent working up the ranks is something to get very excited about!! Aubin went 8-0-2 in 10 games. Did Brodeur do that in his rookie start? If you cant see that, maybe its time for you to call it a career.

Jeff.

Maybe it's time you call it a career on commenting.

Aubin isn't a rookie you idiot.. he's been around for years.. and sucked for years.. and he'll suck again next year. He's Tim Thomas at best.

By the time Brodeur was Aubin's age he had already won 2 stanley cups and a calder trophy.. In the 5 years since?? 2 vezinas, another stanley cup, and a gold medal (including a lockout).. could've been a few more vezinas too if dominik hasek (the greatest player of all-time) wasn't in the league. I feel stupid by actually responding to your comment. I used Broduer as an example of a goalie that everyone can admit is legit.

and just so you know.. Patrick Lalime was unbeaten in 16 during his rookie season.. he sure turned out nicely..

Does anyone remember the net detective?? Does Jim Carey have one or two r's??

8-0-2.. What's your point? Bottom line is that Aubin is always out of position, gives up terrible rebounds, and looks surprised every time the puck ends up in his glove.

and Neil.. your team isn't in the playoffs, so remind me why i'm eating my words.

Does anybody else have a foot and a mouth???

I used to like the Leafs.

Until Adrian brainwashed me into hating them. (aka made me actually look at sports stats and not go on the "but i live in toronto therefore the leafs rock!" argument.)
