The Continuing Woes of Yonge Street (and Toronto Housing)

The past three weeks hasn't been too good for the downtown stretch of Yonge Street. First, there was the falling advertisement outside the Eaton's Centre in mid-March, and then there was that whole Tim Horton's fire thing at Bloor less than a week ago. Just when you thought it was safe to wander aimlessly down Yonge, another weird event earlier today saw the street closed again, this time northbound between Gerrard and Carlton.

The Star is reporting that debris was falling from a housing development earlier today, and that there was a "a six foot by six foot section of brick...hanging off the side" of a building. When police eventually re-opened the lanes in the mid-afternoon, more debris fell and they had to shut the street down again. Yikes.

The building in question is run by Toronto Community Housing and is the home of the Toronto Dementia Network, several outreach programs, and other social services. Luckily no-one - either in the building or outside - was hurt, though Torontoist seriously wonders if this is just a freak occurrence or a sign of the neglect that these buildings suffer. We hope it's the former.
