Back in March, we told you about the launch of MTV Canada. Yesterday we were noticing how they've spent their budget on adding fancy lights to give the Masonic Temple, where they film MTV Canada, more prominence. Strangely, it reminds us of the Chum City building, home of Much Music, without all the foot traffic and big windows to see in the studio.

Newsstand: November 9, 2009

I find the Masonic Temple's new look weird. It's obvious CHUM was the template, but an awful lot of flavor got lost in the move uptown. MTV's new diggs are too forced, it isn't organic.
The MuchMusic franchise is hugely successful and the format of the show, the building, the studio and style have been sold around the world, most recently to Columbia. No doubt MTV is trying to copy the style, but the license they got from the CRTC means they are more of a talk channel as opposed to a music video channel. So far, it's working for them.
I'm happy to see some of MTV USA's most popular shows come up here. I'll even admit a slight addiction to "My Sweet Sixteen". With CTV backing them, MTV's got a real shot at making it in Canada this time around, but I do hope they come up with some original bits too.
I took some pics of the bldg when had all the lghts going in my blog. http://automaticflowersintoronto.mtvblogs.ca/
