Peter Kent Backs SOS

2006_4_6kent.jpgJournalist turned Conservative candidate turned “Journalist” Peter Kent backs the Save Our St. Clair campaign in a story published in the National Post today. Kent cites the spiralling cost of the project as one of the reasons why the ROW is a bad idea. We’d like to point out to Mr. Kent that some of this spiralling cost came from the legal battle waged on the city by the SOS campaign. He also cites “local opinion” against the project with this anecdote:

During months of campaigning in the area during my recent federal political adventure — a disappointing personal outcome, though much satisfaction from the larger victory — I found virtually no support for the project that would narrow sidewalks, congest traffic, reduce street parking and delivery opportunities, complicate left turns and increase pedestrian wait times, while improving streetcar travel times by barely a minute or two.

Peter, just where exactly were you canvassing? No wonder you got thrashed in that election.
Finally Kent, at his objective best, condemns the mayor and his “26 tax and spend cronies” and just about endorses SOS organizer Margaret Smith, who as of now, still hasn’t declared her candidacy for council.

It’s good to see that Mr. Kent is destroying any chance that he will ever be elected in this riding. It’s political suicide to support the non-resident business owners over the people who actually live in the riding!

Why is “tax and spend” an insult? If they are going to tax, I should hope that they spend it.

Are you just making assumptions based on what you’ve read on Spacing or have you any research to back the post. Whether or not you like it, a huge number of the residents on St. C were actually against the ROW. SOS meetings at community centres practically spilled out into the streets in support. Insights of a resident, eh?

I’m pointing out that Peter Kent looks a bit silly saying he found virtually no support for the project. While SOS meetings may have been packed I get the impression from the media and other places that there were a significant number against the ROW.

his political ambitions were foiled by a pillow fight :)

I read the complete story in the NP, what a joke: a) how exactly will Margaret Smith and her SOS ilk find “common cause” with mayoral candidate Jane Pitfield? She voted for the ROW (http://votetoronto.ca/stclair.html) and was in fact chair of the Works committee at the time, b) to blame the fact that construction is delayed until the summer on “procedural shortcomings” is a lie, c) 2 to 3 times as many people contacted the EA team to support the ROW than opposed it; it’s obvious there are lots of supporters as well as opponents, d) hydro wires wouldn’t be buried because sidewalks are being narrowed, but because they’re ugly and many people want them gone — sidewalks aren’t being narrowed mid-block anyway, e) I always love this talk of “barriers” — the ROW is raised with a rounded curb, that’s it. I suppose stores along St. Clair will all be selling out of ladders and mountain climbing gear so folks can still make it over this insurmountable 6-inch barrier, f) Kent says folks along St. Clair “want their streetcars the old-fashioned way” — that’s right, in a dedicated right-of-way, just like they used to be on St. Clair!!!

Yikes, that’s a hideous picture of Kent. Ever since he announced his Conservative candidacy, he has aged two decades.
