Passover passed over

ruprechtaThe year is 5766. Davenport M.P.P. Tony Ruprecht issues free calendars to his constituents. Torontoist decides to use its calendar because wasting paper is bad— worse even than the dismal layout of Mr. Ruprecht’s calendar. Besides, that spot on the wall has been bare ever since the frolicking Daschunds of 2005 went out of style.
April. The non-denominational Torontoist consults its calendar for advice about when not to interrupt its Jewish compatriots, mid-Passover. Torontoist is disappointed. The former Pope and Ruprecht lock in a warm embrace. Happy Easter, indeed. Enjoy your Earth Day. But what of Passover?
Torontoist is driven to Wikipedia. Wikipedia fills Torontoist in about Passover, and Ruprecht, too.

  • Passover (commemorates the Exodus and freedom of the Israelites from ancient Egypt.
  • Passover marks the “birth” of the Jewish nation.
  • Together with Sukkot and Shavuot, Passover is one of the three pilgrim festivals (Shalosh Regalim) during which the entire Jewish populace made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in the days of the Holy Temple.
  • Outside Israel, Passover is celebrated for 8 days, with the first two days and last two days celebrated as full festivals.

  • Tony Ruprecht has been a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario since 1981.
  • Tony Ruprecht is a member of the Knights of Malta, which was apparently formed during the Crusades for the protection of Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem.
  • Tony Ruprecht’s past ministerial responsibilities have included multiculturalism.

A Ruprecht office rep at Queen’s Park cannot confirm what month Passover is in (probably has the same calendar) but agrees that it is unusual for a minister with multicultural interests to overlook the major religious holidays of anyone not Polish and Catholic. After all, even the Daschunds knew when Passover was.

“it is unusual for a minister with multicultural interests to overlook the major religious holidays of anyone not Polish and Catholic”
No, it is unusual for a government-published calendar to note religious holidays that aren’t public.

Wait? Earth Day is a public holiday? I know it’s not religious (contrary to what the population of Saltspring island would like).

  • bleh

Some religious holidays are public, not all public holidays are religious… and this entire post and discussion is completely meaningless.

Why the constant quest for meaning?

  • shazam

What’s the deal with the anti-semitic posters?

  • http://www.torontoist.com Alison

I was wondering about the anti-semitism myself. New editorial policy! The more anti-semitic comments posted, the more I Jew it up!
    Oy!

  • ben

it’s funny how ‘torontoist’ attributes the readers ability to recognize a poorly thought out post as anti-semitism.
it kind of just begins to question their abilities.

  • Bleh

We’re all a bunch of little Hitlers here, waiting to read the next half-assed observation masquerading as profound prose.

  • http://www.torontoist.com Alison

Even newer editorial policy! Anti-semitism or no anti-semitism, I reserve the right to jew it up! Don’t make me send Pesach the Pesach Helper after you with his gigantic horseradish root.
Also, I don’t what blog you’ve been reading, but we’ve never tried to masquerade as profound prose. We wear our superficiliaty with pride!

  • shazam

I personally would love it if you could send Pesach the Pesach Helper over to my place and maybe he could make the fruit salad?
Also, I’m curious how this was a “poorly thought out post”. I thought it was rather well thought out.

  • Jill

If I may vouch for myself, there was never meant to be anything profound about this post. I really just wanted an opportunity to say “Knights of Malta.”
    Knights of Malta

From the Ontario Ministry of Labour:
    Ontario has eight public holidays:
    New Year’s Day
    Good Friday
    Victoria Day
    Canada Day
    Labour Day
    Thanksgiving Day
    Christmas Day
    Boxing Day (December 26)
So Earth Day, Easter Monday and Easter Sunday are clearly excluded.

    you’re all wrong.

Newfoundland gets *so many* holidays. Damn Newfies.
Easter Monday is listed at the national level: http://www.pch.gc.ca/progs/cpsc-ccsp/jfa-ha/index_e.cfm.
