Michigan Doesn’t Want Our Trash?

2006_4_4trash.jpgTorontoist thinks that we’ve done a good job of showing people that Torontonians throw away some pretty good stuff. Which makes us wonder why Michigan doesn’t want our trash? We’re practically giving the stuff away and those ungrateful Americans are actually trying to ban it.
Seriously though, the threat of Michigan banning Toronto’s garbage has floated over our heads for a long time but this time it’s closer than ever according to this Reuters story.
“As soon as the federal government unties our hands and gives us the authority, 90 days thereafter, Canadian trash is no longer welcome in Michigan,” Representative Dan Acciavatti told Reuters.
If this happens not only will Toronto be facing a major garbage disposal crisis this would undoubtedly become a major hot button issue during this year’s mayoral election. We think this should be a major issue in the election regardless of what happens with Michigan.

    From that very same Reuters story:
    Still, free trade legislation could save Ontario, as solid waste is considered a commodity that should not be subject to trade barriers, so a change in Michigan’s rules could lead to an ugly trade war.
    Andrew Hannan, a spokesman for Canada’s Ministry of International Trade, said any new rules on commerce between Toronto and Michigan must continue to reflect rights within the World Trade Organization and the North American Free Trade Agreement.

    That US Federal approval will be a long time coming, as it would also block other US states from dumping in Michigan.
