Gamers of Toronto Unite!

2006_4_5miyamotomus.jpgAnd march over to the opening of Artcade tonight 7-10pm at Microplay (632 Queen W). The group show brings 11 artists and designers that are inspired by classic arcade games. One of our favourite illustrators, Chris Hutsul, is showing pieces like this badass bot, a mashup of two of our favourite pop-culture influences; Transformers and the 8-bit glory of the NES.
In other videogame news be sure to also check out the Video Game Tribute Night at the Boat, April 7th. The night will be featuring Boymagic (Owen Pallett’s new band), DD/MM/YYYY and Laura Barrett.

If you’re thinking of going to see this show I have one word for you: DON’T.
It was a total waste of time. First of all there were like 11 pieces total, and although some of them were interesting, all of the prices were ridiculously high. Although the concept seemed appealing, the excecution simply wasn’t there.

Have you ever seen a thriftstore suitcase filled with mushrooms, a small television screen inset; a loop of a young man dressed as a redcapped cartoon fungus and jumping in one of the city’s beautiful parks? I have.
Most of the two dozen works were vaguely anime-inspired renditions of various historic video game characters, which were fairly mediocre and ridiculously expensive.
Best in show: Set of painted woodblock charicatures of the opponents from the original PUNCH-OUT on NES done in anime/conceptual design style.
Worst: TIE! The afforementioned ‘shroomcase’, and a collection of sexually suggestive pixelated screenshot style prints/paintings involving Mr. and/or Mrs. PacMan.
Unlike the previous post, I have two words: GAME OVER.
