Film Friday: My Damn Brain Lit Up Too Much

So, for cinema goers who aren’t moved by the idea of Sprockets as described below (perhaps you don’t have children, perhaps you hate children, perhaps you hate children when they’re in cinemas, which Torontoist can understand), what is on offer for you loves?

What about… Silent Hill? It’s not really the most high profile film out this week, but Torontoist has a bit of a soft spot for video game adaptations from, you know, actually decent franchises, having been thrilled by the utter pap that was Doom, and with Silent Hill directed by Christopher Gans, director of Brotherhood of the Wolf, and written by Roger Avery (he’s Canadian! And he helped write Pulp Fiction!) There’s a good chance that this is better than everyone says it’s going to be. I mean, have you played the games? They're terrifying.

Ebert hated it, but Ebert hates videogames like they killed his mother or something. (Torontoist likes Ebert, don’t get us wrong. But ‘My damn brain lit up too much.’ Is a seriously snotty thing to say.)

Horror not your bag? Hate Pyramid Head more than you hate kids, maybe? In that case Torontoist is all about The Rocket: The Story Of Maurice Richard. Hockey can be a brutally powerful and beautiful sport, and it’s often hard to see this on TV (because let’s be honest, you can’t afford tickets to see the Leafs either) so it’s good to see that on the silver screen The Rocket offers ‘the most exciting hockey scenes ever presented in a feature film.’ According to Eye Weekly’s Jason Anderson. ‘The Rocket can feel like a big piece of hokum.’ Jason warns, ‘But at least it's bold, gripping, passionate hokum’.

Several festivals also continue this week, with the Images Festival and the Reelworld Film Festival running until Sunday, and Cinematheque begins it’s Klimov retrospective. Come and See has been given an astonishing five stars by Eye Weekly’s Adam Nayman. “This is peerlessly gorgeous filmmaking about absolute ugliness.” But Torontoist is more interested in the Monday night showing, Rasputin, due to a fascination with the 'Mad Monk' (who’s first name is Grigori, not ‘Ra Ra’, Boney M fans).
