Damn You Dundas Square

2006_4_5goldstein.jpgTorontoist lowered its guns on Dundas Square when we heard about Transmedia’s 29:59 project that has video art taking over one of the video billboards in the square.
We found out from Paved.ca that last month Clearchannel pulled work by artist Myfanwy Ashmore fearing legal action. Ashmore’s work uses hacked screen shots from the original Super Mario Bros.
What’s even worse, we found out that work by Brenda Goldstein, one of April’s pieces is also pulled. To quote a comment from the nowpublic blog:

The reason? ClearChannel doesnt approve that you can see a “competitors” video billboard accross the street and a Bank of Montreal logo.

Yep, Dundas Square it’s a public square until an advertising company doesn’t like what you’re doing.

    Could it be that Clear Channel is finally starting to run out of novel ways to make themselves look like big jerks? Are they now gunning for quantity instead of quality?
    If they don’t like what they see, they should just do what I do and walk through the square with their eyes closed. Nearly fell down an open stairwell last time, but after reading this, I think it might have been worth it.

    Actually – that is a link to the original mario battle no.1 project which was one of myfanwy’s modded games shown at interaccess as a trilogy.
    The transmedia 29:59 was supposed to be video game dumps of the games.
