Carbonated Coffee? Ewwww.

2006_4_3blak.gifA keen eyed Torontoist reader sent us this link, apparently Coca Cola isn’t just launching Blak, a new coffee/pop beverage, in Canada but has leased a 4000 sq. foot space in Yorkville. Industry analysists suggests that Coke is trying to wrest a small part of the booming (too soon?) lucrative coffee market away from players like Starbucks.

BLAK sounds like the noise you make after you taste it.
Hmmm, I wonder if they re-hired some of the marketing execs that were responsible for the NEW COKE fiasco of the mid-1980s.

    Seriously?
First of all, Coke doesn’t make enough off its current product lines?
Second, THIS is their idea to take on Starbucks with?

I’m studying in Paris now (well, just in Paris now I guess since classes are cancelled with the riots) and this drink has been out for a bit here.
Now, imagine black coffee with lots of sugar in it. Cool it off and add carbonated water. That’s what this is. Not very good.
Also, it comes in a thinner can, like Red Bull. Probably because you’d be sick if you drank a full can of it.
Surprisingly, it’s become quite popular over here pretty fast.

I would have loved to try this drink but for anyone that is health conscious, the use of aspartame and the other noxious artificial sweetener will prevent me from doing so. Why, when there are other far more healthy sweetener substitutes such as Stevia etc., would Coke chemists decide to use Aspartame which is currently suspected to cause a number of health problems? Sigh….
