Baked Goods Review: Ra Ra Rahier

Up on our favourite bustling strip of Bayview (home to the much beloved Elegant Garage Sale and Hollywood Gelato) sits Rahier, a charming little Easter egg of a patisserie. The peaceful pastel interior is filled to the brim with tasty treats from a simple and delicious pear danish to elaborately decadent miniature mousses. There are some lovely sandwiches to be had (various vegetables and cheeses on a baguette, of course), but they’re no match for the sweets. Just try to leave without a sparkly little bag of almond cookies!

    Elegant Garage Sale is a terrible consignment shop. Over the Christmas holidays of 2006 I attempted to place an item of furniture there. I spoke with “Lynn,” a senior person there. She told me she was interested in the cabinet (she saw a photo of it and was very enthusiastic) and asked me to call some guy with a truck whom she uses to bring items to the shop. I spoke to the truck operator, “Clive,” and he told me that it would cost me $55/hour for him to transport the furniture to the shop.
    I balked at that and then booked a rental truck on my own and called Lynn back. It was at that moment the shop’s sleazy business practices became apparent. Sounding offended, Lynn told me that I MUST hire Clive to bring the furniture to the shop because he helps rearrange items on the shop floor to accomodate the new item. I offered to do the rearranging myself and she flatly refused my offer.
    So, in order to sell the item at Elegant Garage Sale, it would cost me a minimum of $55 to $110 plus a whopping 40% of the price the item ultimately sold for. If an item sells for $1000, that means the consignment fee is effectively about 45% or 50%, which seems outrageous to me.
    Anyway, if you have something to sell on consignment, you would have to be crazy to deal with the slippery, unethical people at Elegant Garage Sale.

    aside from the fact that your comment isn’t actually about the bakery being reviewed, that amount of markup is completely standard for retail. and the store owner has every right to insist that only people she trusts will be handling the furniture etc. entrusted to her store. try craigslist.
