Albany Jane Jacobs Ave?

2006_4_28jane.jpgFrom all the online and offline tributes it’s been pretty clear that the city has the utmost respect for Jane Jacobs. While we know that she did not like academic honours bestowed upon her we think that she’d appreciate having a street named after her. Especially considering what a huge role she played in saving so many of the streets in downtown Toronto. Torontoist would like to propose that Albany Ave., the street she lived on for so many years, be renamed Jane Jacobs Ave. We would not only wholeheartedly support this, we’d also take on the task ourselves.

    Does anyone know the naming history of Albany street? Is it named after the Duke of Albany?

    The emergency services are pushing to get rid of duplicate names within the merged City. Would renaming Albany help this? Is there any other street that might be suitable and at the same time eliminate a duplicate?

    I know the logistics would make it impossible, but I would love for Spadina Rd. (not Spadina Ave) to be renamed Jane Jacobs Way. It would be the most appropriate since it is at the heart of what she helped to save from those who think that traffic is more important than people.

    I don’t know — how about the few blocks of Spadina Road that run from Dupont up to the foot of the Baldwin Steps? There’s already a plaque at the foot of the steps that commemorates the fight to stop the expressway, the steps and Casa Loma are the best example of what would have been lost if the expressway had been built, and the city keeps trying to re-purpose that stretch of land into something significant anyway.
    Although it really should be something in the Annex, like Bloor between Spadina and Bathurst.
