What If They Held An Oscars And No One Watched
Nielsen numbers came back from Sunday's big show and the numbers aren't good. Some 38.8 million Americans watched, which is 8% lower than last year and only the second time audience numbers dipped below 40 million. Some will pin it on the serious and indie-aspects of almost all the major films (Crash, Brokeback, Syriana, et al) others critiqued Jon Stewart. Torontoist blames Gothamist for doing such a hilarious job liveblogging the thing. Who needs TV when you've got Gothamist film gurus Jen Chung and Karen Wilson?
Also, Torontoist like Paul Haggis even more after learning in today's Globe that the Crash writer/director drove Priuses, those cute hybrids, to get to his post-Oscar engagements, instead of an ugly stretch SUV limo or even worse yet, a Hummer.

Great Toronto content there, kids. Would you like to review the president’s State of the Union address, too? I’m sure the Globe will also have mentioned it once it takes place.
Don't all celebrities drive alternative energy cars?

TV numbers are eroding across the board. I don't think the content is to blame, except in the broader sense that TV isn't changing quickly enough to keep up with our other distractions (yes, including Gothamist live blogging.)
I do believe those cars are part of the Red Carpet - Green Cars campaign. http://www.treehugger.com/files/2005/03/red_carpetagree.php
Oh, and the Oscars belong to us all. Even in Toronto.
It might be my imagination, but I THINK I've heard rumors that this city has a pretty big stake in the talkies industry.
i feel like the number of people who own a television is declining
maybe it's just me, but i haven't had a tv for two years, and haven't been what i would consider a "viewer" in over 7
He'd score more cool points if he was chauffered around in an ipod instead of a Prius.
He'd score more cool points if he was chauffered around in an ipod instead of a Prius, don't you think?
It seems that the newest trend is bad TV ratings.. when I was in good ole America last week the newspapers were all over the shitty Winter Olympic ratings. They blamed the fact that the sports are not "american" enough... "who knows a figure skater and what is up with crazy curling!?" (seriously. that was a printed opinion. wtf.) and anyways, it was suggested that because the ratings were so bad the winter Olympics should be eliminated to make way for more $ for the more american-oriented summer ones.
so.. my point is... people who complain about TV ratings suck.
oh, and Joe Clark, get off your complaining horse and submit some TO-savvy content, jerk.
There goes Joe, being a dick. Still.
The TV universe has gone from about 20 channels to about 500 since I've been around. The general population has grown only a tiny fraction of that amount, so I guess it's not really surprising that individual televised events are drawing smaller proportions of viewers than they did back in the day. I predict that we'll soon have 32 million TV channels in Canada, each with an average viewership of... 1.
