Tall Tower Showdown

2006_3_14tower.jpgThe CN Tower is the world's tallest free-standing structure, it's a mantra that almost all Torontonians can recite, and it's been that way for around three decades. Well, it seems like the CN tower's record holding status is being challenged by not one or two but by at least three challengers. The latest is in Tokyo, where NHK, Japan's national broadcaster is planning a tower that'll dwarf good old CN.

Dubai, where skyhills and hockey teams, exist cheek by jowl with camels and desert, has got a tower planned. And China, has got not one but two towers planned, one in Guangzhou and another in Shanghai.

Toronto will soon no longer have the claim to fame of having the world's tallest phallic symbol. darn.

A long time ago, I read a satirical article in Toronto Life about a future Toronto. Other than being a city-state spanning the entire Golden Horseshoe (if only!), the city's CN Tower had an extention added to the top. It was kind of like a giant pen cap that served to keep the Tower's status as numero uno.

Whoever wrote that story is a modern day Nostrodamus!

I kid.

I just hope the other towers are not as drab, not as god-awful brutalist-ugly as the CN Tower. It's a mammoth blight. Can't figure why Torontonians are so fond of it (well I can. it's big and it's, like, theirs, right?)

Great! Today I read in the Star that the CN Tower turns 30 on June 26, and to mark the occasion the Royal Canadian Mint unveiled a commemorative coin yesterday at the famous attraction. So not only is the tower the tallest free-standing structure in the world, it's also now the loftiest structure to grace currency -- for now. I wonder if they are going to have to devalue it on release day given the largest free standing structures currently in the works.
