Say NO to MTV

2006_3_23mtvhosts.jpgMTV has been live in Canada for just over 24 hours and Torontoist’s immediate response is yawn.
Obviously, it is still very new and we should allow them time to work out the kinks, like replacing their version of “hip” Vjs for one (a few of ‘em pictured here). Torontoist will honestly say that based on the quality of their marketing across the city and on television there is potential for good things but do they think they can win us over with a few scantily-clad episodes of Laguna Beach and overly scripted dating reality show, Dismissed….. Torontoist has better things to do like change her cat’s litter and scrubbing toilets than waste anymore brain cells on television this bad.

originally i was pretty excited about mtv coming to canada because they said they wanted to film some subway parties.
then they said they didn’t want to anymore, so i am kind of in the same place as always. i still don’t watch tv.

i believe you, it’s probably not show-stopping, but neither is much.
if i remember correctly, weren’t you determined to not like it before you even watched it?

Kevin, I was remembering days of old with that post. You know that soft spot you have for certain memories. Most times those memories are sweeter in your mind when in reality they probably weren’t as glorious. My childhood was based around those happy memories of Much so I’ll always have a soft spot for the station, you know?
And you’re right I wasn’t eager for MTV’s coming. On the principle that its an American brand wanting to take over a Canadian market. Remember Eatons department store? Bought out by Sears? Obviously, chances are slim that this will ever happen with Much and MTV but there’s that part of me that wants to keep what’s “Canadian” safe and untouchable. Think mom & pop shop vs. the MEGA mart…mom & pop being Canada’s MuchMusic in this case, you’re always rooting for mom & pop to keep afloat! That’s where I stood.
BUT I will say this. I was impressed with MTV’s marketing and really anticipitating to see the way it would all play out. Would MTV really be worth watching? How would it push Much to be different? To be better? This ultimately could give Much the kick in the ass it truly deserves! So, in a sense I was rooting for MTV and their simplistic marketing too. After all, competition can be healthy and let’s be honest here mom & pop(Much) is not doing so badly financially either. They could stand a good whipping.
Over the last couple of days, I’ve been tuning into MTV out of curiousity and imagine my genuine surprise when I find myself bored and even more annoyed with their Vjs. Its like some producer said, ok now “be” cool and hip for the kids to relate to and having it come across that way? Remember Carson Daly from NYC MTV fame? Its like that but worse. They’re not believable or watchable but maybe that’s because I’m not the demographic they’re going after? Whatever the case, so far I’m not very impressed and they had a lot of potential.
I’m really torn because I was looking forward to a bit of healthy competition and in the end seeing a Canadian brand becoming the victor but now its like, what’s the point? Maybe MTV never had a fighting chance? Is MTV mom & pop?
Its not all bad, I will give MTV one thing and that’s their on-air graphics are fantastic! Simple and smart.

I don’t know what’s worse MTV Canada or Jennifer Hollett talking to me about the cultural significance of pop lockin’

  • http://www.jillmurray.com Jill

Why? Are you already an expert on popping and locking?

CTV still has to air more than 50% CanCon on MTV, and they’ll have a lot more money to make good programming with.. I think it’s a good thing.
Plus I am also now obsessed with 8th & Ocean.
