Morrissey Spites Canada, Fans Even More Depressed

2006_3_27morrissey.jpgHow do you further depress already morose Morrissey fans? Don't show up. Yep, Moz will not be booking Canadian dates for his latest tour in protest of the seal hunt. Morrissey's histrionic statement is here.

This feels like a hoax but British music paper NME picked up the story so we won't be alone on this one if it turns out some cheeky Morrissey fan has pulled the wool over our eyes. We're not taking stances on whether we like the seal hunt or not but we are going to call Morrissey on this statement:

Construction of German gas chambers also provided work for someone - this is not a moral or sound reason for allowing suffering.

Calling us money grubbing, cruel, barbaric and callous is fine. You're entitled to your opinion Moz but comparing the seal hunt to the Holocaust, that's just in extremely poor taste.

Oh well, I'll miss Moz. But at least we'll have Martin Fry from ABC. Has anyone noticed the pink posters pasted on EVERYTHING around Queen, King, and Sumach? Corktown must be a major hold-out for fans of 80s Glam-pop and gold lamme jackets.

This is about as meaningful as organizing a Canadian boycott of Brigitte Bardot and Morrissey and company.

If you're going to whinge, at least spend 5min researching what you're complaining about. Let's stop the idiots who club them to death and deal with the fact that we've totally screwed up the ecology in that region to the point that Canada now has to have a managed cull.

His comparison to the Holocaust is not over the top if you are an extreme animal rights activist as Moz is. I wouldn't have used that comparison but it I completely agree with him that it is abhorent barbaric stupid practice.

PLEASE, it is completely unneccessary. A managed cull is NOT a response to the screwed ecology either. It's been going on for many many decades. Hmmm, how did the voracious seal population not take over North America before the White Man showed up? From what I've read most of the arguements for the cull are fallacies.

Also, it's funny to note that BECAUSE of the screwed ecology, the seal slaughters are actually having more of a difficult time since the ice floes are more scarce and thinner...ha!

Good lord, SHUT UP Morrissey and McCartneys and Bardot already with the seal hunt. There are bigger freaking fish to fry everywhere you look and boycotting Canada is an idea that was thought up on the short bus.

And way to compare the seal hunt to the Holocaust. That's not offensive AT ALL.

Ugh.

If we can take a stance on someone's stance, why not take a stance on the issue itself?

Even so, why take it out on his fans? Maybe he shouldn't sell his albums in Canada anymore.
Sure he's miffed about the seal issue, but America and Britain have had their fair share of atrocities throughout the years, how about myxomatosis used on English rabbits--which caused a slow and painful death. This is rubbish, just because he doesn't want to bother crossing the Canadian boarder on his next tour.
What a wanker.

As much as I get annoyed by the celeb naysayers who should worry more the multitude of issues out there than the seal hunt. Liberal Senator Celine Herieux-Payett said the hunt pales in comparison to the slaughter of innocent Iraqis at the hands of the U.S., who defended the hunt to an American family. Or another rebuttal from a former vancouver mayor to a German MP who found it highly ironic that you condemn the barbarity given your country's history ... yikes!! Still this boycott of canadian products is strongest in decades, This year it is expected to spread to France, Germany, Spain, Denmark and may be worth £56m, far outweighing the £9m value of seal skins and other hunt booty. Regardless of the arguments pro and con, the images and videos are bloody awful to anyone, so i wonder myself why bother with this slaughter given that we are taking one hell of an international beating.

Saturday night a few hundred Morrissey/Smiths fans partied in T.O. at the annual Morrissey/Smiths Fest at the Funhaus nightclub. Good times were had by all (yes, at a Mozzer appreciation night) and much talk was filling the room about possible Toronto dates later this year. So it was probably a good this announcement was made the Monday AFTER Saturday's party.

I know animal rights is his pet cause, but if I wanted to, I can name many MORE reasons why he should boycott his U.S. dates instead.

How does a discussion about an English singer and a Canadian seal hunt lead to random anti-American jabs? Can Canadians not discuss something without comparing/contrasting with the US? Typically provincial...

He has every right to stage (or unstage in this case) his protest. But let's be clear about the problem we are talking about. It's only because the seal hunt has such bad "optics" that it (and Canada) is being singled out. If the cameras could see dolphins being caught in long line nets or if the mass killing of cows and pigs was done out in the wild, where the cameras could follow, instead of behind the closed doors of a private factory... Morrisey would be protesting so hard that he'd be left performing in his house to an audience of none. If you think clubbing something you've never met before is harsh, ask a farmer what it's like to birth, feed, care for, nurture to maturity, and then kill for food any of the animals on his farm. And that happens in every country on the planet, every day. I'd buy the t-shirt though - Morrisey - the south wing tour 2006.

In fairness to the former Charming man, Moz has also managed to piss off his homeland and America too, he's branded Blair and Bush as being "worse than the terrorists" for spearheading the war against Iraq. And said that London should have been prepared for the terrorist attacks last year, as it was only a matter of time before extremists took revenge. He says, "My view was, how would anyone be remotely surprised? It's an obvious retaliation against Blair's intentions.
"Bush views Iraq and thinks, 'Well, we will control this country eventually anyway so it doesn't matter how many people we kill.'" He's also said that he wished Bush had died (didn't he say that about the queen too?) So this is not unsual he's having a go at us over seals!

The said images they keep showing are 20 years old. A lot has been done since then to curb unnecessary cruelty in the seals' hunt. 90% of the kills are done via bullets and not the clubs. Studies have also shown that the clubs (Hakapiks) is also the most effective way to kill as seal and it provides a death more pain-free than bullets. It has also been illegal to kill pups since 1987. I totally disagree with inhumane killings of any animals but as far as I know, the seal hunt is pretty regulated and assholes like Moz, the McCs and Brigitte Bardot seem incredibly uninformed about the situation and don't even make the effort to get informed.

This is coming from a Man who lives is America that has started and illegal war, saw tens of thousands killed, imprisons people and denies them of any rights, illegally spy's on its own citizens, stand by and allows a real genocide in Darfur to continue and this is his big issue? I think we should boycott this Morons Cd's. A nation that backs Regimes that deny citizens of basic rights and I could go on but would take pages and pages. His career is so dead he needs all the media attention he can get, so why not pick an easy target. Of all the world wrongs this may be viewed as wrong but there are far more horrific things that need our attention then the seal hunt. Hop on the Bandwagon Morrisey because it will be the only media attention you will get, your talent doesn't get you recognition so you need some platform to get exposure.

Another quote from Morrissey: "As things stand, Canada has placed itself alongside China as the cruelest and most self-serving nation."

Morrissey is super-edumacated.

Animals kill each other.

Moz needs the publicity for his fading career. If he believed what he said he would boycott England (they eat Foie de Gras there--know how it is made?); America (they eat Veal there--a life of torture before death); Spain (bullfighting); Mexico (cockfighting). There is I suspect nowhere "Moz" (who I had never heard of before his boycott) could go given his high principles.

Not really disagreeing with people's responses to the issue at hand, except to say that Morrissey's career isn't exactly dead (as some on here are saying). He had a relativly huge come-back album (and tour) two year's ago and is set to release a new album next week which is being hailed by many as perhaps his finest solo CD. He's also been on various magazine covers (including the NME two weeks ago). Maybe not the heights of Mozzermania (circa 1991), but not exactly "dead" either.

***cough - British fox hunting - cough***
Piss off, Moz.

if comparing mistreatmentcommitted towards animal and mankind is "extremly poor taste" you'stating that Nietzche is extremly poor taste. Mistreating mankind and animals is the evidence of the same hatred towards what is alive ...
