Just What In The Hell is Canadian Food?

2006_3_9poutine.jpgD.B. Scott over at the Canadian Magazines blog pulled the numbers from the survey in the back of Toronto Life (not up yet). The question this month is about what kind of restaurant you go too when you eat out, fitting considering it's TL's restaurant issue. Chinese and Italian top the bill at 21% and 17% respectively but in a strong third is "Canadian" food at 12%.

Which makes us wonder what in the world is Canadian food? Just what exactly are the 12% of people surveyed by Leger for this poll eating? Are 12% of the people being surveyed by Leger actually going to their neighbourhood Tim Horton's and having soup in a bread bowl as a "night out?" Or is Canadian food like the food from this Montreal restaurant, poutine with foie gras (pictured), Torontoist could deal with that.

Living south of your border but travelling to T.O. fairly often, I have wondered if Toronto has a hometown food. Here in Chicago we have deep dish pizza. My hometown of Pittsburgh has Primanti Sandwiches (that being fried sandwiches with french fries and coleslaw on them) and most other cities/countries have a cuisine associated with them. Does T.O.? the only thing I have ever found in T.O. that I can't find anywhere else is pea-meal bacon. But Wikipedia has a small article on Canadian Cuisine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuisine_of_Canada

i think pizza and burgers are no longer italian and german, but canadian-adapted foods that most people eat all the time.

When I think of Canadian food, I think of places like Rebel House (Near Rosedale station) or Canoe (on top of TD Centre). You know, lots of deer, caribou, moose duck and syrup. And wicked ceasars.

Yes, we can't live without our caesars!

What about those peameal sandwiches at St. Lawrence Market? World-famous and damn delicious!

Clearly, 12% of Torontonians regularly eat butter tarts for dinner.

if foie gras is ever considered a "canadian" food, remind me to move to the us. effing disgustingly and viciously produced.
