Inter-City Pillow Fight Challenge

2006_3_8pillow.jpgTorontoist was looking at YouTube last night and found images of a pillow fight in San Francisco. A light bulb went off, Torontoist would like to be the first to propose an inter-city pillow fight challenge. We challenge cities around North America and the world to organize pillow fights on a certain day (SF picked Valentine’s Day, Newmindspace did a Toronto pillow fight in November). Winner is the city with the most pillowfighters. If that’s the case Toronto better step up, SF had around a 1000 people. Better yet, why not turn it into a monthly thing a la critical mass!

I’d like to see what Kevin and Lori say about this challenge!

We had a pillow fight at Western during Orientation week 2004… and it made it into the guiness book of world records as the biggest!
TOist should try and top this!

I heard Paige had a pillow fight with all the boys she brought to her dorm room in 2003 and IT made the guineess book of world records

I heard that in 2002 Adrian had a pillow fight with his numerous Olsen twins/Hillary Duff posters and THAT made Guiness…

unfortunately, toronto’s pillowfight was stupidly and inappropriately planned for the exact same day/time as a rally at dundas square against gun violence that a number of family members of victims spoke at. maybe they should do their research next time.

re:helen’s comment, the event mix-up was totally coincidental; the yonge-dundas square people indicated to us that the square would be free, which was obviously not the case when we got there. however, we struck a deal with the rally organizers and they successfully co-opted our event to promote their cause.
hah, oh ron. i dig this idea. the london group, mobile clubbing, who claims to have originated the phenomenon (you should see the wikipedia drama) asked us if we would have a syncronized pillow fight with them on december 21st. we politely told them to bugger off because last year it was -27ºC on that date.
we estimate our turnout in the new york pillow fight to have been about 500, dwarfed by SF’s 1,000 because they had theirs on a friday night, which we have learned is the optimal time for this kind of event. because our warm season is so narrow, though, and we have been enamored with the idea only since november, our events have been on weekend afternoons when normally i’d be sleeping. you can bet if we had a summer friday night pillow fight in nathan phillips square, it would be enormous.
however, i am concerned that people might experience “pillow fight fatigue”, ie the novelty will wear off. london has already had 3 in a short period of time while some people are calling for the event to be an annual thing. the earliest i figure we could do another one is july.

thing is, out of respect for the families of the victims, i would have called the pillowfight off. it was inappropriate to go ahead with such a thing when you did find out. it was disturbing for me to see photos of the rally with feather flyign everywhere in the foreground.

    dear helen,
i still don’t think you quite understood what happened: we had our pillow fight meet off to the side of dundas square and the rally people ENCOURAGED us to relocate toward the center of the square. We were about to bounce and go to Nathan P. Square and we were ASKED not only to stay, but to steal the spotlight. Then the deputy mayor of Toronto announced the beginning of the pillow fight on the PA system.
