Chinese architect Yongsang Ma has won the Mississauga competition to design the Absolute tower in Mississauga. The lithe looking glass tower was a heavy favourite to win the contest and he beat out six other finalists.
Queen West residents group Active18 and bird-friendly condo development WestSide lofts trade press conferences and barbs tommorow (thanks Spacing Wire!). Active18 is showing the press the results of its recent Queen West community design charette and WestSide lofts is bringing in recently firmless architect Will Alsop to launch their development.
Toronto artists apparently make more money than Canadian artists anywhere else. Per capita Vancouver has the most artists beating out even bohemian Montreal. Stats show that the average artist in Toronto makes 34K a year, not too shabby.
All this money doesn't seem to be helping the CBC though, they're looking at leasing out more of the Death Star broadcast centre on Front Street. Any takers?

34k isn't too shabby? It's total crap, and practically something to aspire to as an artist-- but only if you put in those hours at the bar every night.
34k is total crap for an artist--you're kidding, right? You want amiddle class lifestyle, get a middle class job. 34k sounds unrealistically high--I imagine this statistic must includes artists with dayjobs.
Regarding that tower: it reminds me of some pottery I made in grade six that went horribly, horribly wrong. Pray it doesn't explode in the kiln like mine did.
As for the average income of an artist, I'm guessing that the definition of "artist" they use must be pretty liberal and include people like designers who create directly for clients. Also, there may be a tiny handful of very rich and famous artists that are skewing the statistic higher than the wage of what most people would consider your typical starving artist. Like, say you had 10 artists, and 9 of them made $0 but the tenth made a million dollars, then the average salary of those artists would be $100k. Useless stats.
Nonny, 34k is crap, not 34k for an artist. Like I said, for an artist it's an amount you ASPIRE to, even though it's not very good money in the grand scheme of things.
We are too happy to have our artists 'starving'.
Great point on the stats, Gary.
I think Ma's condo tower is stunning. Dubbed the 'Marilyn Monroe,' this 50-storey condo it screams look at me. In today's Star, Urban affairs critic Christopher Hume discusses how this one building could change the face of our western suburb. , Ma's tower, named Absolute by the developers, Cityzen Development Group and Fernbrook Homes, will accomplish that, the tower represents a distinctly 21st-century sensibility, a kind of neo-expressionistic esthetic that blurs the distinction between art and architecture. This is a highly sculptural work that balances the demands of form and function in a strictly contemporary fashion."
I wish Toronto had that building.
Not so bird friendly. The whole nest went missing about a week and a half ago.
No, not Bernice! She was so young. *Sob*
I think the building is absolutely gorgeous. I love it.
It does look pretty sexy. I'll be curious to see how it turns out.
Yeah, I also have a serious case of condo envy now. The elegant design is an especially hard blow considering how ugly and boxy some of the towers erected in Toronto are.
