Don't Get Rid of Maisonneuve Mediascout

2006_3_1maisonneuve.jpgTorontoist is well aware that Maisonneuve magazine is out of Montreal, the editors seem to love rubbing that in our Toronto noses. But because they're sooo stylish, smart and funny we forgive 'em for it. Well changes are afoot for the President's Medal winning mag.

Maisonneuve is moving away from its general-interest, Harper's/New Yorker for the under-35 set beat and refashioning itself as a Montreal city mag starting this Fall. We have mixed feelings about this. Frankly we're in love with the mag's story selection, it's unique view on world events and the fact that they have a great stable of bloggers.

One of the things that we hope isn't sacrificed is Mediascout, the mag's daily e-mail analysis of Canada's news. Mediascout, to Torontoist, is like that morning cup of coffee. Something is missing when we start our days without it. Unlike our friends with day jobs at real newsrooms we can't afford subscriptions to "the big six" (what Mediascout calls the six dailys they use to make up their digests). Also we find that more often than not the Mediascout team's analysis is dead-on and hard to find elsewhere.

So, get rid of the witty front of book articles, turf the well-written features on world events, we'll live. Torontoist's stack of magazines will keep him going. But if anybody at the Maisonneuve offices is reading this, please keep Mediascout. Don't let a good thing die.

Yes, MediaScout is indispensible... but sir, I believe it's now the Big Seven its contributors track (they added the Star recently).

Niggling point: I didn't realize Torontoist was gendered. Wouldn't it be "stack of magazines will keep *it * going"?

Sorry, I'm being an obnoxious copy editor...

MediaScout is even more annoying than the "-ist" house style where the name of the site is substituted for "I" – yours truly stopped reading it because I couldn't stand the grating tone of the thing.

As for "great stable of bloggers", no offense Torontoist, but it appears they've produced a grand total of six posts in the past nine months. Proof that you don't need to work very hard to make an impression in the new new media game ...

Hmmm.... looking at Maisonneuve's City Living online column, which I suppose is blog-like, I notice several posts in the month of February. There's also On the Ring's Edge, their Olympic blog but you're right in saying that a few of their blogs have been left to sit and gather dust.

i would argue that marc w only reads blogs that share the same angry web-guy tone that unfortunately plagues him. hence his alignment with that wrinkle-face at free city of arrogantville and other a-holes that will go unnamed.

I am aligned against trust fund follies like Maisonneuve and sincerely believe that anyone can do a better job with no money.
