David Miller's Boring Davey Lecture

2006_03_31Miller.jpg
Yesterday at The Isabel Bader Theatre, David Miller delivered this year's Davey Lecture on "Building a Great World City for the 21st Century." Unfortunately, it was far more election speech (and a boring one at that) than anything remotely motivational or inspirational. Plus, he was kind of mean afterwards. So, in lieu of inserting a nice flattering photo of Miller, Torontoist feels it would be more appropriate to include this one, of his face half-blocked by the media circus (CTV, CityTV, 680News, Omni One, CIUT, me, and others) that followed him around. But that's what you get for being boring and mean: you get half a face.

[Ed. Note: David Miller's speech is available here, so you can decide whether he was boring or not, whether he was mean, we have to take David Topping's word on it. Thanks to Spacing Wire for the link.]

I think you and many others have come to the same conclusion, the current mayor is looking tired and void of motivation or inspiration.

Miller is a helluva alot more better than Pitfield. When I first arrived in Toronto, it was Art and then Mellhell!

I still like him, to be honest - boring (and mean) or not.

I was there and it was not boring, though it did sound election-ish. He outlined a vision of the city which politicians rarely do. Gauging a speech on whether its boring or exicting shows a real lack of journalistic prowess. And the your insinuation of him being "mean" -- if he ws mean say why he was mean. Your post is shallow and weak and only demeans the somewhat decent coverage Torontoist has previously done on city issues.

He wasn't particularly friendly to me or anyone else afterwards. He kept scowling at me(blurry evidence [like of Bigfoot]: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dstopping/120639111/). And I was just making an observation - I found the speech boring, and I think that's relevant. In fact, that's what every other reporter was talking about after his lecture was done as we waited for him to come out. Sorry if you thought that my playful musing about the mayor's speech demeaned Torontoist, but I respectfully disagree.

In defence of David (Topping and Miller). The mayor had probably been at council all day wednesday because of the budget. And I mean ALL DAY. If you had to spend 14+ hours in a room with Rob Ford I'd be a little peeved too.

Just don't say stuff ("it was boring") and don't back it up with any reason why. I just expect a smidgen of analysis.
