Budget First Responses

2006_3_23duncan.jpgSo Dalton and the Queen's Park Posse have announced their budget and he was right there were no surprises! The city is getting lots of money ($600-odd million) to build a subway to York U. which the higher ups at the TTC don't really want but is better than the subway along Sheppard that goes nowhere.

A little more funding for social programs but probably not enough to completely reverse the gutting that Harris did. More aid for students but not to post-secondary institutions so things like strikes could've been prevented. Welfare rates inched upward but child benefits still got cut despite Liberal election promises. And we still got that deficit.

The Globe's quick analysis is here. The Star's got a whole team working on their budget coverage, including a CP story that keeping a deficit despite collecting oodles of cash might actually be a Queen's Park ploy to still be able to cry poor to Ottawa. Or you could go straight to the source.

Torontoist is a bit of a policy wonk so next year we might liveblog the budget.... how many of you will be reading? Yeah, didn't think so.

Hmmm. I wish I could've said I didn't see this coming, but I did.

TTC: "We're raising fare's again, for the same reason we always do. We don't get any money from anyone, we're so poor, wah wah waaaah"

Province: "Here, ya big whiner, here's a bunch of moola, shut up already"

TTC: "Wheeee!!"

Us: "So, you're going to roll back the fare hike, right?"

Mayor Miller: (And this is an actual quote)"No, probably not."

Me: "GRRRRRRRRR"

I guess it's always easy to complain...but Torontonians have got a lot more than people in other cities... think of the new City of Toronto Act-it would return more money to the city, instead of spreading it thin across the province. Yes we didn't get everything we wanted, or the changes we did get are insignificant, but sometimes "poor" change is better than no change.

I would rather the TTC have the slight raise in fares that are coming and know that that a campus that has something like 60,000 students is actually connected to the rest of the city now. With the plan to build a huge stop there for all of the YRT and Go Transit, it will be worth it in the end...

Except maybe for the students that will hear the train go by every 5 minutes or so when they are in class... lol...
