Baseball Fever On Bloor?
During the World Cup huge parts of the city were paralyzed by fans celebrating victories. We're wondering whether similar things will be happening because of the World Baseball Classic? Cuba and the Dominican Republic are already in the semis at the WBC. Torontoist wants to know whether
members of this city's Cuban or Dominican population will be congregating anywhere in the event of a victory?
The wildcard is Korea. The Korean team are the only undefeated team at the tournament and eeked out a win over East Asian rivals Japan 2-1. We're still not sure whether the city's many Koreans will be clogging up Koreatown if they win though. It might just be too cold, or maybe baseball just doesn't have the same cachet among rabid Korean sports fans. We'll find out Saturday, Mar. 18 (10pm ET, on Sportsnet) when the Koreans will be playing either the US or Mexico in their semifinal game.

The problem Ron is that the World Cup is a storied classic with an Olympic sized response to it. The WBC is a new tourny who's schedule is as confusing as the Leafs trade deadline performance. But thats the growing pains of a new competition.. there are some definite kinks that need to be ironed out before the next time round in 2009.. all in all its a good idea though... but its unlikely that you'll see too many street parties.
By the way.. I've got my Italia Campione Del Monde '82 team poster right infront of me... I wonder if anyone will have an Albert Pujols Dominican Republic WBC 06 poster on their wall in 24 years??
The only person I know that's even been remotely interested this year is a Korean buddy who's living in Korea right now.
I have that '82 poster too! I want to replace it with a 2006 campione del monde one!
I've been watching the WBC and enoying it alot. All of the games have been very exciting and I have alot of Korean friends and they're frantic. They've even racked up some long-distance bill to Anaheim and all over the US.
I dont think it will come anywhere near the status World Cup because the Americans are involved.
Americans destroy anything international. If the Americans had any say into how the World Cup was to be held in the 30s it probably would have been dead by now.
Hey, smart guy: it's eked out, not eeked out. What are the Koreans, a bunch of mice? Eeek, eek, eek, we won! We Won! Eek!
