Baked Goods Review: Down Under Edition

tim tam.jpgWe realize that this is a rather unorthodox Baked Goods Review since, (a) Arnott’s Tim Tams are packaged and store bought, not made with love at your local bakery, and (b) they are extremely difficult to locate within Toronto (if anyone has any leads, please do let us know). Tim Tams are a classic Australian treat, a chocolate covered chocolate cookie with a layer of chocolate in the middle. A beautiful thing, to put it mildly. Rumour has it that boxes of Tim Tams have occasionally been known to appear on the shelves of Dominion grocery stores, but a more reliable source is the good old internet. Great Aussie Food will ship the cookies right to your door. Delivery costs are on the steep side, but the Christmas-like joy of receiving cookies through the post makes it all worthwhile. And by the way, don’t get sidetracked by wacky flavours like latte or black forest – anything other than Original or Classic Dark is a waste of time.
However you procure your Tim Tams, it’s important to know how to consume them like a real Aussie. Shotgunning a Tim Tam (a process also known in some parts as a ‘Tim Tam Slam’) looks exceedingly ridiculous and immature, but once you try it, you’ll never go back. In addition to a Tim Tam you’ll need a hot cup of coffee or tea. Bite opposite corners off the Tim Tam, and use the cookie as a straw to suck the coffee through. Once the beverage has saturated the Tim Tam, quickly pop it in your mouth before it dissolves into your coffee. Just describing it is making us salivate.

I’ve gotten them at the Dominion at Bloor and Spadina, but they’re stocked pretty regularly at Bloor Super Save (384 Bloor St W). I agree that the originals are best, but there’s also a damn good caramel one.

I used to see them at Sugar Mountain on Richmond by Peter. Not sure if they still carry them though.

I’d kill a man for a Tim Tam slam. I’ve been dreaming of them ever since my trip to Oz. They will be mine. Oh yes, they will be mine.

Double coat Tim Tams are also excellent – twice the chocolate coating!!
Thanks for the tip – I’ll be heading to the Super Save asap – It’s been too long since someone has brought me these back from Oz!

I’ve been on the hunt for Tim Tams ever since I got back from Oz…it’s been a month now and no luck. I’ve ordered online but those will only last me a while. Does anyone know where they recently sell Tim Tams in Toronto? I’ve been to Dominion, Hasty, and called the old Super Save but they said they didn’t have them :(

Yeah Toronto needs more Tim Tams!
I have looked everywhere, even bought some cookies that I thought would be able to do the whole hot chocolate/coffee melt thing…No success.

Tim Tams and tea, be still my heart. I was happily surprised to find some varieties of these yummy treats at the Cheese Magic shop in Kensington Market. Enjoy!
