It’s Better to Burn Out Than Be Unreleased

time-fades-away-banner2a.jpg By virtue of the world wide web, Neil Young’s famous 1973 concert recording, Time Fades Away, is now available in digital format.
Online petitions abound, the classic Young performance has been mythologized as one of the greatest live performances not for sale – supposedly on par with Dylan’s Newport performance since Young peeved off the audience with his song choices (ie. not playing Harvest).

Other notable unreleased albums: Q-Tip’s Kamaal the Abstract, the Brion-produced Fiona Apple, Ryan Adams’ Suicide Handbooks, those Dylan-Cash recordings, Josef K’s Sorry for Laughing…um…Can anyone think of future SMiLEs? One would think that if downloaders can force the Black Eyed Peas to release “My Humps,” they can also force a few worthy albums out of the archives.

    If only they would open the flood gates.
    A weird combination, but nevertheless, Id like to hear those Warren Zevon tracks with Mike D done in 94. Hows that for a mixmatched pair.
    Or the double albums worth of tracks Broken Social Scene has sitting on a shelf.

    I think Wilco’s first version of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot fits into this category. As good as the released version was, I’ve heard the original was even better.
    I know it was fairly available on the Net before they had to trash it, but finding it now is impossible.
