Hockey Night in Dufferin Grove

2006_2_16pondhockey.jpgThere are few things more Canadian than pond hockey. This country's outdoor rinks are the birthplace of our national game and arguably one of the main reasons why Canada continues to have a leading role in ice hockey.

But is global warming and climate change threatening our national game? Consider this mild winter in Toronto, the city's outdoor rinks at times are probably closer to wading pools than decent ice surfaces.

A number of environmental advocates realized this and organized an outdoor game of hockey during the recent Montreal climate change conference. They're doing it again tonight, 6:30pm at the Dufferin Grove Ice Rink, celebrating the one year anniversary of the signing of the Kyoto Protocol.

Toronto will be joining hockey/eco enthusiasts in Canadian cities like Vancouver, Halifax all the way up north to communities in the NWT. Torontoist is also wondering whether players in Tucson, Arizona will be playing ice hockey or ball hockey? Either way, we're just happy they're playing.
