Chris Murphy As Himself

2006_2_17sloan.jpg

If there’s a rule about playing at your own tribute night then Chris Murphy (there he is on bass at the back) does not follow them. But we all know that rockstars don’t make rules, they break them. And Chris Murphy is a rockstar of the highest order.
In fact Murphy and Sloan are such an important part of the Canadian rock psyche that a friend of Torontoist’s suggested the idea of Chris Murphy impersonators. Kinda like Elvis impersonators but without the white jumpsuit or the dance moves. It’d be a great hit at high school reunions, even weddings. We wholeheartedly agree.

Wow what a fucking nerd-fest, just look at the picture and tell me that isn’t borderline sad on many levels…

According to this review: http://theratio.org/bl/?p=28, it was a pretty malicious event.

Yeah… it was painful at parts. But I have to admit Laura Barrett covering “Junior Panthers” was pretty sweet. Pity, she forgot half the words. Also, the Bicycles were good.

Granted not all the bands were well-practiced or talented, but would people have rather sat through version after version of EXACT Sloan song replicas? God no. That wasn’t the intent of the night – it was to take Sloan songs, go crazy with them, and have fun with some good-natured (and well-intended) mockery. Trust me, Chris knew what he was in for.
The reviewer at theratio left halfway through the show. Any “reviewer” worth their ilk should know that you need the full experience to do a proper review. In leaving early, he/she missed the best (which was saved for last) – Laura Barrett and the Bicycles amazing version of “Don’t You Believe A Word”. Even Jay Ferguson was dancing.
Nice to have met you last night, Ron, and great photo there (I’m the blogTO staffer.. now I will leave these pages before I’m chased out!)
