An Offensive Post-It Note, or Transit Art?

nastynote.jpgIs this really necessary? It was like that part of Catcher in the Rye, when Holden Caulfield scratches out all the Fuck Yous on the staircase. Except from the next subway car, there was no scratching involved. Torontoist has never felt so insulted in our lives. And just for sitting on the subway! Whatever. The TTC is just mad at us for the maps we posted last week.
It would be a sad state of affairs if vandalism went from graffiti and sharpees to post-it notes. Could there be anything more nerdy?

    I’ve noticed in the last few months a TON of tags going up – on adhesive labels. That’s just sad.
    The whole point of tagging, I would think, is the brazen act of DOING it – writing on something in public.
    Doing the writing at home and then surreptitiously slapping your stickers on something? That’s just cowardly ass-hattery. For shame.

    Real graffiti seems to be springing up a lot faster in my neighbourhood lately. And the “broken windows” theory is definitely holding, with one ignored tag quickly attracting more. Believe me, I wish they were on adhesive labels; I see no bravery in vandalizing someone else’s property with an idiotic unreadable scrawl of paint.

    I didn’t have my camera but I saw a self-hating example of gratti on the Queen streetcar yesterday that read
    “I hate people that take the TTC. I hope you all die.”
    Or something like that.
