"...Ianno is completely useless," writes blogger Andrew Spicer in a recent Torontoist comment. "Why isn't [a Canadian political scandal] finding its way onto the nation's political blogs?" asks Siri Agrell in this Maisonneuve article that we've referred to more than once. Well, it appears as if both comments have been addressed. Tony Ianno, incumbant Liberal in the federal Trinity-Spadina riding, might not be that useless afterall, and Can-bloggers might not be that 'pussy.' It seems that Mr. Ianno and his Liberal braintrust have found a neat way to fundraise, according to blogger Inaki Mondragon. Here's the gist of the bloggage:
Bypassing Elections Canada, Tony Ianno established a trust fund to pay for his political campaigns. That means anonymous donors have been able to give Ianno unlimited quantities of money under the table. His trust fund has been described in the mainstream press as “sneaky,” “a recipe for corruption,” and “encourag[ing] abuse.” It is entirely lacking in transparency.
Torontoist does not endorse external links nor are we suffer from Harparanoia.
(Another thing that's kinda neat: Type in "Ianno" in Google News search and you can read about how Mr. Ianno pushed us!)

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-Verse
Anyone want to bet that Paul Martin demands that Ianno gives a full explanation as to where this money came from and that the money will be held outside of the MP's control until a solution can be found to this troubling loophole?
I sure ain't taking that bet.
Vote Chow early and often!
Thanks to folks like Chow, Churley and other NDPers who might unseat Liberals, it just helps the CP cement its lead over the Libs. I can't believe I'm thanking the NDP, it must be the euphoria.

“CPAC-SES tracking shows the Conservatives ahead of the Liberals for the first time in the campaign. Stephen Harper is also statistically tied with Paul Martin as the party leader Canadians think would make the best Prime Minister. The three point Tory lead is on the cusp of the margin of accuracy among decided voters. Tracking completed Tuesday night has the Conservatives at 36%, the Liberals at 33%, the NDP at 15%, the BQ at 13% and the Green Party at 4% nationally.
I know I know don't get to carried away, but honestly do you think the Libs have a chance. NOT!
Great post. Consider this a trackback from this article - http://journalism.wordpress.com/2006/01/04/liberals-getting-hurt-online/
No matter how much the Canadian public particularly in "vote-rich" Ontario loathe the Liberals, the emergence of a Harper majority govt should scare the sh*t out of Ontario voters, best case, would be a minority Liberal govt w/the NDP holding the balance.
"scare the sh*t out of Ontario voters,"
Please elaborate.
I don't want to "harp" on tax breaks, increased defence spending ---urban armies - wtf??, and his populist appeals to crack down on crime to woo the Toronto urban vote who are not only grieving but are angry and fearful of what's going on.
There isn't enough room (here) to elaborate, it even appears that he's spending as much of our tax $$$ as Martin and NDP, my main worries about him, is his social agenda.
You can read Stephen's view on how social and economic conservatism must unite in his 2003 musings when he was an Alliance leader, presently Harp as Tory leader has distanced himself in order to appear more palatable to the mainstream Conservative and rightwing Libs and draw your own conclusions:

Rediscovering the Right Agenda by Stephen Harper
"We also need to rediscover Burkean conservatism because the emerging debates on foreign affairs should be fought on moral grounds. Current challenges in dealing with terrorism and its sponsors, as well as the emerging debate on the goals of the U.S. as the sole superpower, will be well served by conservative insights on preserving historic values and moral insights on right and wrong."

I am going to be a new father in '06.
Harper seems to think $1200 a year is a solution to counter subsidized Day Care. Not to mention his views on Health Care.
Those are the most important things to me right now, so based on that very simple criteria, he won't get my vote.
Dyee, there's no chance of the "emergence of a Harper majority govt." At best, Harper will get a minority, and have to rely on either the NDP, the Bloc or disaffected Liberals to pass legislation... Are you one of those covert Liberal operatives? Or just ill-informed?
Broken engine, I am a father too, $1200 per year does not cover much more than diapers and a few basics of raising a kid especially if you make low wages or have more than one kid, mortgage etc. Disposables cost a minimum of $2960 per baby per year diapers, wipes, garbage fees etc) - which most parents opt use rather than cloth. He thinks $1200 will cover daycare costs? What planet is he on - a cozy middleclass one where mom stays at home and dad goes to work. This baby bonus will appeal to the middle class parents who don't require daycare or need subsidized daycare or fulltime daycare at all. Harper does not even know the cost of milk let alone the expenditures required to raise a two career family.
JKelly - you seem to be able to forecast the future, I hope yr right, I detest the liberals as much, they don't have the moral authority to govern but like many, highly wary of Harper and his social agenda. I guess that makes me an ill informed NDPer.
With Quebec voting Bloc, it's almost impossible for the Conservatives or the Liberals to get a majority right now. If the Conservatives get even one seat in QC, it'll be more than expected.
Yeah, Harper's position on same-sex marriage makes me unable to actually vote for his party. But, nonetheless, I'm rooting for a Conservative minority.
I'm not really familiar with the provenance of this tidbit, but from the looks of that blog, they were simply asking more questions about a story that was already reported in the Spec, etc. Not pussyish, but not exactly breaking a scandal either...
i'm not really familiar with the word provenance.
my terrible spelling aside, it's not a new story.
