Christmas with the Conservatives

harperharperharper.jpg
With SH, it’s one present after another. Here’s what the big guy has passed down over the past two weeks:
- Minimum sentences for drug offenders. (Obviously targeting Andre Boisclair here.)
- Eliminating conditional sentences, or house arrest, for all indictable drug offences.
- A promise NOT to decriminalize marijuana.
- Shut down safe-injection sites in Vancouver.
- Reduce wait lists for cancer treatment, diagnostic testing and other health care treatment, with or without private clinics or paid trips the United States (not just for a trip, but for medical treatment). This of course is with no new funding.
- Reduce the GST to five per cent over 2 years.
-$10.9-billion for 125,000 more day-cares and $1,200 per child for parents.
- But best of all is that SH will hire an all-jurisdiction superhero to watch over government (who will most likely be Vic Toews).
And along with those plans comes the CPC Podcast, which is explained on the Conservative website:

Have conservative.ca to go! Podcasting allows your iTunes software to download conservative.ca MP3 files to your iPod whenever new files are available.

Is it too early to endorse a candidate yet?

reduced wait lists for cancer patients, increased day-care funding and reducing a tax that the libs promised they’d eliminate (a tax reduction that likely benefits the poor more than anyone). sounds ok to me.

  • Josh

want to know what sounds good to me?
    conservative podcasts. they are so…excellent.

  • melanie

yes, but a tax reduction that could only come into affect in 2011(read the fine print) and all the while inflation goes up and other funding gets cut. voting Conservative based on those ‘empty’ promises would be ignorant and giving power to a man who wants us all to live in the States. as far as i can tell he cares very little about what it means to be Canadian.

  • Dave

He’s gonna privatize healthcare. no two ways about it, he’ll do it, and it’ll really blow. Low taxes are great, but being alive is better. And my mother got cancer and cancer treatment very quickly. It’s been in remission for about 2 years now. Might not be that way if we had to drive her down to the states for that…or had to pay money we don’t have for it.
And marijuana is a substance with less negative effects than tobacco. People enjoy using it, and being a free country, we endorse the exercise of freedom, even if we ourselves don’t agree with the exercise in question. Everyone hates drugs right, but only really because they’re addictive and bad for you. So when neither is present, there’s no reason other than a largely paternal “you can’t do it son because I don’t approve” kind of view. That’s not Canada. Canada is diversity and freedom. Diversity in so much as different cultures can do what their respective cultures do, without interference. Freedom, basically the same. We let people do what they like doing.
For example, Gay marriage. It’s a legal right, according to the constitution there’s no possible reason not to let them legally marry. (Yes, it conflicts religiously, but it was never a question of RELIGIOUS MARRIAGE. That’s culture, government leaves that alone. it’s their job to let the legal part take place)
Anyone remember the way SH whined like a baby when he lost that vote? Or how he tried to pretend the Bloc’s votes didn’t count when he was willing to let them count to bring down the liberals? …who’ve been doing a fairly credible job cleaning up their act lately? …seeing as it wasn’t liberals, but a few people, who were in the liberal party.
    Anyway,
Sorry, but SH doesn’t have my vote. He doesn’t strike me as credible. He strikes me as a bigot, and a complainer. I don’t wanna hear him whine and whine and whine and whine about the little buzzwords he likes to throw around to insult the liberals. That’s what kids do.

J, i agree with you on that…the premise of a conservative podcast is a bit insane. btw happy holidays to u & to-ist.

There is nothing that this clown can throw down that would ever ever ever induce me to vote Conservative. Minimun jail sentences for drug offenders? While there are always the big dogs in the drug world, the people who end up addicted are NOT CRIMINALS. They are sick and need HELP. NOT jail time! I know, I’m a recovering addict. (13 years)
I have 2 friends both suffering with MS. They both use Marijuana to ease leg and arm spasms. So he’s taking that away too, AND he’s gonna throw them both in jail. Brilliant! This guy’s a Jacka**!
My vote goes Liberal. Not perfect, but show me any politician who is.
I actually like J.L.(as a person), but lets face it lads, the NDP haven’t a hope in hell.
We saw what the Tory’s did to Ontario under the Harris régime. Sorry mates, I’m not going through that sh*t again.

All I want is for Harper to find a way to smile without looking like a pedo.
Actually, granted, his smile in above pic looks more like a drunk dragon. So at least he has some diversity.

“tax reduction that likely benefits the poor more than anyone”
sorry, but you’re being a little naive. who saves more, welfare recipient saving a hundred bucks buying dollar store items over the year or the rich saving $10,000 buying houses, cars and luxury items? there is no GST on food, rent, children’s clothing – the items the poor are more likely to spend their hard earned dollars on. this is simply a very shallow gesture meant to buy the rich vote.
Firewall Harper is nothing but a buffoon and would ruin the economy and social infrastructure of this country and plunge us into spiralling debt.
“Is it too early to endorse a candidate yet?”
your post definitely does not show why you would support this candidate. there are so many holes in his platform that I hope most Canadians can see SH is nothing but an opportunistic, vote buying anti-Canadian hell-bent on selling this country out to all takers. do you really agree with those planks? if so, maybe the US would be a more suitable place for you to live.

  • Michael

I don’t know Haruki, to me “Is it too early to endorse a candidate yet” reads like Joshua was being facetious.
But I think everyone is always being facetious.

  • anon

haruki- my point on the tax cut likely benefitting the poor was that a consumption tax reduction is more meaningful for lower income earners. income tax is progressive, sales tax is regressive. a reduction in regressive taxes is widely acknowledged to favour the least wealthy.

  • DRH

Buying cars and houses does not exactly hurt the economy, or eliminate jobs.

  • Josh

yeah haruki, facetious. i would slap harps if i ever saw him on the sidewalk. in the face!
each of his lame ideas are so…lame. follow the link with the GST plan for more…

  • Michael

Just because we call a tax progressive or regressive doesn’t mean one is necessarily better than the other.
Dunno who wrote this, take it for what it is:

How can anyone vote Con? It’s a party founded on a broken agreement between McKay and Orchard, it’s a party with an ultra-scary social con core and pretty-scary neo-con exterior, it’s a party that only exists to beat the Liberals, killing a socially progressive (though still neo-con) party in the progress and telling Canadians they only have one choice now (not all neo-cons hate equal rights) while attacking the Liberals for “democratic deficit”, it’s a party that puts the concerns of Canadians second to the concerns of Washington (they want a US representative in Parliament!), they want to turn Canada into everything that’s wrong with the US! And like typical neo-cons, who may know a lot about business but nothing about governance, they promised to cut taxes AND INCREASE SPENDING (daycare? new government positions? where’s the money coming from? oh, PRIVATIZED HEALTHCARE, that’s where).
