Welcome to Puggle-town

puggles.jpg...Or,Canine Eugenics Is In for 2006

...Or, If Jake Gyllenhaal is Doing It, Then Why Aren't We?

...Or, Designing Dogs

In retrospect, the story of the Puggle in Toronto was all-too-predictable: Someone in New York cross-breeds dogs, various influential celebrities pick up on the new breed, the trend inevitabley trickles down (or up) to Toronto.

puggles2.jpgThe puggle, developed seven years ago in New York, is the cross-breed between a pug and a beagle. The mix between the toy dog pug and the long-nosed hound make for an attractive mut, or so says the current supply-demand curve. The advantage of the puggle is this:

Puggles have allergy-free fur and are apparently free of the bulging eyes and stubbornness of pedigree pugs and beagles.

Thus far, there are two local puggles known to Torontoist; one in the Yonge and St. Clair area, and another in the Yorkville area. Puggle-sightings at the Timothy's World Coffee shop at Yonge and Avoca, just one block south of St. Clair, and at Hemmingway's Bar and Restaurant on Cumberland have sparked interest in more puggles throughout the city.

Is the puggle a burgeoning trend? Are puggles man's extension of intelligent design? Has anyone seen a puggle?

I saw the puggle along with some other designer crossbreads on Regis and Kelly a couple weeks ago. They mentioned that it has muc better breathing abilities since it's nose isn't all smushed into its face.

Most of the cross breeds were done with poodles, like the cockapoo cocker spaniel/poodle.

Really who wants a dog named a cockapoo

"Really who wants a dog named a cockapoo?"

Howard Stern?

I want a puggle SO SO badly. They are too cute. Designer dogs are so strange but always look adorable and have such good names.. puggle.. labradooble.. ahh!

So cute...the main draw for me would be the hypoallergenic fur. Also the CUTENESS.

It has much better breathing abilities? How have we gotten to the point that the ability to breathe independantly is a selling point? It might convince me to choose a lungfish, but I expect all my dogs to be resperator-free.
On the other hand, most mutts are really great dogs, no?

I HAVE 2 BEAUTIFUL PUGGLES. I HAVE A 2 YEAR OLD FEMALE AND A 4 MONTH OLD MALE. THESE ARE THE MOST FRIENDLY DOGS IN THE WORLD AND THEY ARE GREAT WITH CHILDREN. THEY ARE SO LOVING AND ARE COUCH POTATOES.

welcome to... Torontoist: the Puggle adpotion site.

We have an adorable 12 month old female puggle named Ellie. She has a website www.myspace.com/puggle! Send a picture of your puggle..
She is so cute, and loves us like crazy. Only downside is that she finally got potty-trained- it took a LONG time. Also, her sense of humor is strange- she likes to pretend she is vicious sometimes when she is bored and we have to dicipline her because she likes to bite! Other than that we love that dog! Our allergies don't bother us as much either - we used to have a lab.

Looking for puggle as family dog. Preferably breeder within driving distance with references. Puppy is where we want to start. Southern Ontario, Canada

I have been looking for a puggle for a couple of months. If anyone knows of a breeder in Ontario, I would really appreciate an email.

Thank you,

Sarah Wilbrink

Puggles are great pets. I know there is some controversy over the new trend of "Designer Dogs". However, I feel it is a great way to achieve the best characteristics from a variety of breeds.

This trend has led to hypo-allergenic dogs, increased intelligence, and pet to family compatibility. The Puggle is hard to come by, but I have been collecting an archive of breeders, images, and information on this new mixed breed at my website. If you are interested in the Puggle give it a shot. http://www.pugglemaniaonline.com

We're looking for a beagle in a few weeks, and will consider taking a look at the puggle.

We're in Toronto, we're big beagle fans.

We have a Bassugg, otherwise known as the "Puggle Hound" He is a mixed breed of 50% Basset Hound and 50% Pug. He is addorable. He is a great companion, wonderful with the kids and very smart. He does snore like the pug but has the long nose like the basset, not sure if he'll have any of the pugs breathing problems. He is only six month old right now but we have not run into any problem with him yet besides the donting potty training that comes with any puppy! He is now starting to catch on and is very well behaved. I love my Puggle hound! We are expecting our second Puggle Hound in July... can't just stop at one gotta have a pair of them... their too cute! It's the perfect Family dog!

This is for Erin (16) posted March 21, 2007:
Where did you get your Basset-Pug (pugglehound) mix pup? Can't find anyone else that breeds them. Thanks for looking.

We are going to have our puggle puppie in 1 week. We never heard of that dog before until I saw an add in the useottawa.com. I just though they were so cute!! We starded to do some homework and found out the big buzz over them. in our search, we foun out that they are great dogs!! So we decided to get the dog for our family. We just can't wait to have her in our home.

By the way, there are still 2 puggle puppies left if our interested. Look it up: www.useottawa.com

Puggles. Cute - yes, smart - better believe it. Sad thing is that they are "the flavour of the month". From the way this thread reads, it's like ppl need the next big fix. I have a puggle. And she was adopted from the local pound here in South Eastern Ontario. Apparently she was used to breed, then dumped off. So much for the flavour of the month... after a certain age these poor pups seem disposable. Hopefully ppl will think before buying because they are "cute".
