Million Dollar Baby

In times when a popular television show revolves around two super-wealthy women driving around the country making fun of those with jobs, and line-ups for lottery tickets can reach pandemic proportions, why should anyone be surprised at this? If you don’t care to follow the link, it is a woman who will do just about anything to get a million dollars in one year. Isn’t she cute/funny/shocking? Not really, since there are millions of other human beings in the same pursuit – minus the self-imposed time restrictions. The all-too-familiar challenge is even less respectable than the Hilton/Ritchie show, as it missing the spec of shock that comes with Nicole Ritchie dumping fresh milk on a sidewalk. Yet this woman was on Breakfast Television and has made over $4,000 CND (a far cry from $1,000,000,000, but still a considerable sum). What gives? Is this actually art? Even if it is, please don’t give this woman any money.

    I came across a site just like this a couple years back but without the art spin. Something to the effect of “Hey, I’m an idiot that can’t manage my finances. Please donate some of your hard earned cash so I can continue my career as a professional sloth.”
    I kind of feel bad for this Astrid though. Debt sucks, especailly debt of that magnitude. Nevertheless, she won’t be seeing a dime from me.

    savekaryn.com … got a book out of it, then a movie deal, then another book deal …
    … and there’s about a thousand sites expressing their indignation towards her.
    But every town needs their own savekaryn.com, no? Someone for the contact list of local media who want to connect with the youth demographic.
    (The same demo that has no $$$ to buy the crap being advertised that supports the media trying to attract them, etc.)
    As a follow-up to the ethical standard being set by this post, I suggest Josh start digging into which of the “indie” artists highlighted on Torontoist are subsisting off trust funds or related parental largesse.

    i’d love to out all the trust fund persons in the arts community, not to mention all the writers selling their work to event listings companies. but alas, i have to work for a living, as i’m sure you do. so let’s live and let live – except in the case of obnoxious astrid.

    You’re the one who’s making the scene, writing for an audience of shut-ins and suburbanites.
    It wouldn’t be that difficult, either. Just take names of everyone who talks about how “broke” they are above any other topic. Maybe the ones who are clearly substance abusers can go into a special category. Like with Astrid, you can just hang them out to dry without fact checking, then let the bloggysphere’s self-correcting mechanism work its magic.
    That’d be “citizen journalism” at its finest.

    yes astrid has really been hung out to dry here, mark. i’d be surprised if she hasn’t shut down her whole project by now. after this post, she almost has no reason to live.
    please. do you have to be so melodramatic about these things? it’s not the end of the world. go take a shower or something.

    Having had the chance to interact with Astrid on a professional level – graphic design – I gotta say that she is a perfect example of dismissiveness masquerading as worldliness.
    But I applaud her pluck.
